Hello, I am an avid listener! Thank you for the free podcasts. Here's my burning question: I've read that raw fruits are best to eat alone (30 minutes before or after a meal) in order to gain any nutritional benefits because of the way they absorb/break down (or something along that line). What is the truth behind this...? Should I stray from combining fruits or certain fruits with other foods and do raw fruits solo?Read More

Q. I found some sugar-free syrup at the grocery store. A serving contains 10 gm carbs, 0 gm sugar, 10gm sugar alcohol. What does that mean? What is sugar alcohol? A. Ironically, "sugar alcohols" contain neither sugar nor alcohol--at least, not the intoxicating kind...

You're right: Erythritol isn't easy to find in stores. You might have to order it online. Swerve is one brand I've seen. (It's not cheap but doesn't sound like you'd be using that much)

Thanks. Found it on Amazon. It's $6/lb. It is expensive. I am going to try it out to see how it is anyway. Thanks for your help. Best option would be to get used to having tea/coffee without sugar or any other substitute for that matter. Still find that hard to do. Hopefully, some day, I will be able to do that...

Julia

Julia Hi Nutrition Diva! I make my own baby food from organic fruits and vegetables and then freeze it for later use. I feel funny about using the microwave to defrost my son's food, but am I just being paranoid?

I wouldn't microwave in plastic containers but other than that, I really don't think there is anything to worry about. Here's more info: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=158064261324

Spaghetti squash is a variety of winter squash, related to butternut and acorn squash. Baked until tender and shredded with a fork, it turns into spaghetti-like strands...

Nutrition Diva Although newly popular, the "HCG diet" isn't new. And the evidence still doesn't support the claims.

A long-ago discredited fad diet has been getting increased attention lately, thanks to Web chatter and the claims of a bestselling author. The so-called HCG diet's recent popularity is a bit surprising ...

i don't like the word "diet" it implies that you are depriving yourself of something and i don't believe in that. i believe in moderation :)

@Cheri, the issue is whether they are made with nitrites not whether they're made with turkey.

I like all of the above, and would propose pistachios as #5. You can buy a huge bag at Sam's or Costco and opening the shells gives you something to play with while you crunch. Another really easy snack is to open a bag of frozen brussels sprouts and clink a few into a bowl, microwave and add onion salt.

A debate is heating up in the European Union over fatty acids. Should food companies be required to differentiate on labels between omega-3s that come from fish and the slightly less-beneficial kind that come from plants?

Great link. Even as a lifelong vegan, I'm always peeved when plant-based omega-3s (ALAs *to be* converted, maybe, in some people...) are touted as on par with DHA/EPA. I'm looking forward to widened availability and more research on algae as a source of EFAs.

Rita McKenna Cohen

Rita McKenna Cohen Hello! I love your podcast. I recently listened to a podcast which mentioned the benefits of eating yogurt and other foods with live & active cultures. You mentioned that the heating process of making frozen yogurt often kills the cultures. If one uses yogurt and directly freezes it in a dessert, will the cultures still be viable? (thank you)

Hi, Rita. I think I mentioned that in the episode you're referencing but just in case: if you freeze live cultures without heating them first, they are still viable.
