Nutrition Diva Can losing weight really be as simple as replacing our china?

www.washingtonpost.com
That's the premise of "The 9-Inch 'Diet' " (PowerHouse),a book published last November by a pair of advertising executives that makes a strong visual and verbal argument that much of America's weight problem stems not from eating the wrong foods but from eating too much.

We also have been doing this for years. It does help but what you put on the plate is just as important.

The company I work for (VSP Vision Care) subsidizes our gym membership...we pay just under $6 a month, but the gym's records have to show that we go to the gym on average 2 or more times a week. If it drops below that average we have to pay full price until we get our quarterly average up again (motivation! heh). They can then show our insurance ... See Morecarriers exactly how many of their employees work out how often, which lowers the insurance rates...which more than pays for the gym membership subsidy. Win-win!

Just bought a new pair of running shoes. My husband and I decided that maybe if our insurance would pay for more running shoes every 6 months......! What would happen?

I'm teaching stats/rsch. methods and have used your explanations as examples. I love a columnist who explains the methods and statistics instead of just saying "this is". Thanks!

lard = made with dead animal fat. lard = sad, dead animal pie. I'd rather risk my arteries. :-) It's not like I eat pie every day (in my dreams!). (And yes, my family is from the south, so lard is the only way pie is made according to family tradition.)

Ah yes, definitely not for vegetarians! I'd eat pie every day in my dreams, too.

Steve Sarjola

Steve Sarjola I just finished listening to podcast #67 Protein Promises and you mentioned that a person should take 1 gram of protein per body pound or 2 grams per kg. Being I weigh 180 that would mean I should take 180 grams of protein per day and if so that would seem really high considering with some research I found that I shoul...d be getting 56 grams per day even if I live an active life style. But the text I just looked at said to take (males aged 31 to 50) 0.8 grams per kg. If I'm doing the math correctly this is half of what you recommend. Help!

I hope I made clear in the episode that it's NOT necessary. It's just an option. Sounds like you're on the lower end but still well within recommended range.

Yes. Your podcast was very clear about it. No problem there. It's just that I kind of knew I was on lower side and wanted to see if I could go up on protein in-take but couldn't. I am not really vegetarian but after reading Michael Pollan's books, don't feel like eating meat and without meat it's difficult. That was my only point.

Happy Turkey Day to you also, & I will watch out for the pie. When I see it, it will be all over for the pie. :-)

Nutrition Diva Test your Thanksgiving nutrition savvy in this week's episode:

nutritiondiva.quickanddirtytips.com
Does turkey really make you sleepy? Is pumpkin pie more nutritious than other desserts? Can cranberries ward off infections? Americans are celebrating Thanksgiving in a couple of days so I thought I’d take a closer look at some of the nutritional lore that often surrounds the holidays.

Natalia Dear ND:

Do you have a podcast on natural vitamins vs. synthetic vitamins? I just purchase my vitamins from the pharmacy and never thought twice about any synthetic issue..

Please help!

PS. You're the best.

just hit a minor setback in my thanksgiving preparations, having removed the tip of my thumb with my chef's knife. You totally lose points for that in cooking school.
