O.A.R.S. - Whitewater Rafting
Jim Geltz recently contacted O.A.R.S. about his October 6-day Cataract Canyon trip with members of the Sierra Club, the Tamarisk Coalition and the National Park Service. With O.A.R.S. providing rafts/gear/guides, the group worked to remove the invasive Tamarisk to restore riparian lands.
Jim had this to say: O.A.R.S. an...d the Sierra Club joined forces to assist the NPS with a tamarisk removal project on the Colorado River at Spanish Bottom in October. The result will be some fine new camping sites in a few years. Two major sites were cleared of fire charred tamarisk and tumble weed and groomed for restoration efforts including the planting of young cottonwoods next year.
In addition to a lot of fun for the 23 Sierra Club participants, the outing also produced funds for the Tamarisk Coalition, a non-profit organization helping coordinate tamarisk projects throughout the west.
All the partners agree, it was a great outing and plans are being drafted to do it again next year with the trip beginning on October 3, 2010.
