Old Capitol Museum, The University of Iowa The University of Iowa News Release:

International Programs launches new television and radio program 'Worldways'

International Programs at the University of Iowa will inaugurate a new monthly television and radio series called "Worldways" from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol.

Program... host Joan Kjaer, familiar to Iowans from her public radio series "Know the Score," will explore topics that are international in scope and central to people's understanding of how individuals fit into the global landscape. The programs will take place before a live audience one Friday a month and will be recorded for later broadcast over UITV and KRUI-TV. Live streaming of the programs will also be available at the International Programs' Web site at http://international.uiowa.edu. All programs are free and open to the public.

The Nov. 13 "Worldways" program will coincide with the 10th anniversary celebration of the UI Center for Human Rights and will focus on human rights issues.

Kjaer's guests will include Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights and recipient of the 2009 Courage of Conviction Award from the UICHR, in conversation with former UICHR director Burns Weston about current international human rights issues.

There will also be a tribute to Dr. Ignacio Ponseti and his groundbreaking work to develop a non-surgical correction for club foot; a discussion of the Philippine Reservation at the 1904 World's Fair; a conversation with young human rights professionals about their current human rights work in areas such as human trafficking, immigration, and child labor; and a live performance of "Songs of War" by UI music faculty Stephen Swanson and David Gompper.

Upcoming themes or geographical focal points for "Worldways" include Africa (Dec. 11), "Taping the World" (Jan. 22), India (Feb. 12), Asia (March 5), and Latin America (April 9).

"Building global competencies among our students, faculty, staff and the general public has never been more important than it is now," said Downing Thomas, associate provost and dean of UI International Programs. "We're thrilled that, with 'Worldways,' we'll be able to reach out to the public in new ways, taking advantage of both traditional media like television and radio and new media like streamed audio, archived clips and podcasts."

Kjaer said she hopes that this program will bring together scholars, researchers, artists, musicians and innovative thinkers from all parts of the UI campus and beyond to make a substantial contribution to public discourse on the most difficult issues of the day.

"Iowans are interested in what happens around the world, at least partly because what happens elsewhere affects us here at home," Kjaer said.

"Worldways" is a production of international programs at the UI in partnership with the University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums, UITV and KRUI. For broadcast details, visit KRUI or UITV. International programs, your global intersection, connects students, faculty, staff, and the Iowa community to the world. More information about upcoming "Worldways" programs can be found at http://accents.international.uiowa.edu/global-gigs/introducing-worldways/.

For more information or special accommodations to participate, call Kjaer at 319-335-2026.
