Its time may have been over. Had it remained standing, its viability solely as an opera venue may have today been questioned. For example, I have to agree with music historian Joe Horowitz's assessment that the Met's opera house at Lincoln Center was an anachronism even on the drawingboard, an evolutionary throwback. The opera house construction ... Read Morethat proliferated in the 1950s accomodated the new intimacy, while the Met stubbornly clung to an opera world that had died decades earlier. City Opera will also, I think, come to regret not rejecting Lincoln Center a second time when it had the chance. Regardless, Boston needs an exciting, architectually distinctive opera venue.

Opera Boston
Opera Boston celebrates National Opera Week (Nov. 13—22) along with opera companies all over the country, by presenting a FREE installment of the popular Opera Boston Underground cabaret series on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009. This special National Opera Week program is called “Operatic Acrobatics: Opera Without a Net", wi...ll be presented at the intimate 125-seat Lizard Lounge (1667 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge). This FREE show is 21+, and reservations are not accepted. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the 45-minute show starts at 7:30.

Ten young Opera Boston singers, including Opera Boston Underground crowd favorites Sol Kim Bentley, Brenna Wells and Julia Mintzer, will perform difficult, high-wire repertoire from the operatic canon, complete with death-defying feats. According to director Adrienne Boris, “We’re not shying away from doing real opera in a bar setting. These singers have big voices and are in total technical command of some really exciting material."

Opera Boston Underground will be hosted by Opera Boston Music Director Gil Rose.

Opera Boston seeks to extend its reach by providing non-traditional venues for opera performance. Not only will it demystify opera for new audience, but it also gives young Opera Boston singers the chance to try out different repertoire in a fun, informal setting.

Opera Boston joins over 90 opera companies in 32 states in producing innovation, accessible, free programming during National Opera Week. For more information about National Opera Week, visit www.operaamerica.org/now

BOSTON (AP) - Late in the second act of Rossini's "Tancredi," Ewa Podles lets forth a prolonged F below middle C _ a note of such visceral power and purity that its resonance seems to pin the audience back in their seats.

My husband and I attended Tuesday's performance. It was superb. What a cast! And Ms. Podles proved wrong the theory that mezzos and contraltos don't get the applause that sopranos and tenors do. We are looking forward to the Offenbach in the spring.
