Emi Williams Honored As ECAC West Women's Ice Hockey Goalie of the WeekOswego State women's hockey player Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) has been named the ECAC West Women's Hockey Goalie of the Week for the week ending November 15, 2009. Williams made 71 saves to keep the Lakers in both games versus ninth-ranked Neumann Knights despite a 4-2 loss and a 3-2 overtime loss. On Saturday, Williams stopped 40 of the 44 shots she faced, including 19 shots in the second period.  In Sunday’s overtime loss, she registered 31 saves.  Oswego State is 2-3 overall and 1-3 in ECAC West play.

Men's Basketball Falls To Utica 82-71 In Season OpenerThe Oswego State men's basketball team lost its season opener 82-71 to Utica at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Second half shooting proved to be the difference in the contest as the Pioneers shot 55.2 percent from the field on 16-of-29 shooting, while the Lakers went 14-of-39 for 35.9 percent. Utica forward Patrick Goodman led all players with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Oswego State was led offensively by Chad Burridge's (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) 25 points.The first half was a seesaw battle that featured seven ties as neither team held a lead greater than four points after the first minute of play.  Kevin Johnson went coast-to-coast for a layup after grabbing a defensive rebound with 38 seconds left in the period to give the Pioneers a slim 37-35 lead at halftime.

Justin Fox Honored As SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Player of the WeekOswego State men's hockey player Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) has been named the SUNY Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending November 15, 2009. The Lakers moved to 7-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the conference after recording a 5-1 win at Cortland and defeating previously unbeaten Utica 3-2 at home.Fox registered one goal and two assists, including an assist on the game-winning goal, against the Red Dragons. On Saturday, he scored the eventual game-winning goal to hand the Pioneers their first loss of the season.  He is tied for second on the team in scoring at 17 points on six goals and 11 assists.

Women's Hockey Falls To Neumann 3-2 In Overtime Niki Blazenko scored the game-winning goal for ninth-ranked Neumann College with 3:47 elapsed in overtime as the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team lost 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in Aston, Pa. Senior Jenna Kirkwood (Chilliwack, B.C.) tied the contest for the Lakers late in the second period to send the game into the extra period. Oswego State dropped to 2-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the ECAC West, while the Knights improved to 4-1-1 overall.It was a high scoring first period as Neumann notched the first goal of the game at the 3:22 mark when Jessica Schroeder scored her fourth goal of the season.  Jillian Bergeron (Brockville, Ont.) recorded her second goal of the series for the Lakers with assists going to Aprilyn Gush (Sr., Carleton Place, Ont.) and Meagan Big Snake (Siksika, Alberta) three minutes later.  The Knights regained a 2-1 lead with 10:39 elapsed in the frame when Holly Williams tallied a power play goal.

Second Half Rally Not Enough In Women's Basketball Loss At NYU 71-65The Oswego State women's basketball trailed by three points with five minutes remaining, but was unable to upset nationally-ranked NYU in a 71-65 loss to open the season on Sunday afternoon in Manhattan. Sophomore Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, as three other Lakers also posted double-digit points. The Violets' Grace Carmen led all scorers with 16 points to go along with eight boards. Tricia Sullivan (Sr., Copenhagen, N.Y.) scored a fastbreak lay-up after an outlet pass from Traci Bacon (Jr., Massena, N.Y.) with 10:53 remaining in the first half to give Oswego State an 18-12 advantage over NYU.  However, the Violets began to chip into the lead before a pair of Emily Foshag free throws gave NYU its first lead of the game at 22-21 with 5:55 on the clock.  Both squads traded baskets for the rest of the period before the Violets built a 34-28 halftime lead.

Men's Ice Hockey Defeats Utica 3-2The second-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team survived a third-period flurry from visiting Utica to come away with a 3-2 win on Saturday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The Lakers held a three-goal lead heading into the final period, but the Pioneers registered two goals late in the third period to test the young Oswego State squad. The Lakers improved to 7-1-0 overall, while Utica suffered its first loss of the season for a record of 2-1-1. Oswego State got off to a quick start as the Lakers went on a power play in the first minute of the game.  Utica effectively killed the penalty, but Oswego State caught the Pioneers in a line change as Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.) skated up the left side of the rink.  Rodrigues threaded the puck through the crease to Chris Ayotte (Cornwall, Ont.), who charged up the left side for the one-timer past Utica netminder Anthony Luckow at the 3:07 mark for the 1-0 lead.

Women's Ice Hockey Sticks With Ninth-Ranked Neumann In 4-2 LossThe Oswego State women’s ice hockey team stayed with the ninth-ranked Neumann Knights, but came up short in a 4-2 loss on Saturday night in Aston, Pa. The Lakers erased a three-goal deficit after the first period to pull within one goal in the second, but were unable to get the game-tying score. Oswego State fell to 2-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in ECAC West play, while Neumann improved to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the league. Neumann grabbed a 1-0 lead 39 seconds into the contest after a Jasper Thomson goal.  The Knights took a two-goal lead at 14:35 in the first period when Kayla Dubowski scored on a pass from Jennie Greenlee.  Neumann’s lead grew to three goals before the end of the frame as Diane Peters tallied a power play goal three minutes later.

Wrestling Edges RIT 24-22 in First Dual Match of SeasonSenior Eric Leusch (Rochester, N.Y.) pinned Stephan Avorkliya at 4:49 in the 285-pound weight class to give the Oswego State wrestling team a 24-22 victory over host RIT on Saturday afternoon in Rochester. Freshman Kyle Sheridan (Syracuse, N.Y.) also registered a pivotal pin at 197 pounds in 1:47 against Braden Friscia to cut into the Tigers' lead. The Lakers will compete at the Doug Parker Invitational next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Other victories for the Oswego State wrestlers came at 141 pounds when Brandon Heffernan (Jr., Martville, N.Y.) defeated Tim Banks 14-6 in a major decision, 149 pounds when Blake Fisher (So., Seaford, N.Y.) defeated Dominque Graham due to a technical fall at 6:03, and 165 pounds when Marc Collins (Jr., Farmington, N.Y.) defeated Nick Fuschino by decision at 5-1.
