OXNARD, CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCES WEEK-LONG COMMUNITY FORUM TO REVITALIZE DOWNTOWN AND INCREASE TOURISM

OXNARD, Calif. – A project that was initiated four years ago by the Oxnard Convention & Visitors Bureau has now entered into a new phase with the support of the Oxnard City Council. Hired by the ...Oxnard CVB in 2005, Roger Brooks with Destination Development, International (DDI) conducted a Community Assessment of Oxnard in a week-long unannounced visit by his team. Upon completion, the results were presented to community stakeholders in a two-hour public forum. With the City Council’s support in October, the next step in the process is creating a Destination Brand for Oxnard.
This project will be part of an initiative aimed at enhancing the community for residents while also increasing tourism and economic development. As part of its CommunityBrand™ process, Roger Brooks and the DDI team will return to Oxnard from January 11-15, 2010, to work with the community and facilitate a multi-day process called a charrette, to identify a brand direction for Oxnard.
During the charrette, the team will work with the community to identify the city’s assets and devise ways to capitalize upon them to create a distinctive identity for Oxnard. “Branding is not logos or slogans,” says Brooks. “It’s about the product itself and how to set Oxnard apart from everyone else. We’ll work with the community to develop the perception potential tourists will have of the town, the feeling it will elicit. Because there are dozens of towns to choose from, in order to get visitors to choose Oxnard, we need to let them know the difference between it and other towns in the region.”
Throughout the week, DDI will be soliciting input and feedback from various stakeholders - including residents, business owners and community leaders. This ensures a collective, collaborative process and provides critical information for incorporation into the branding vision and action plan. Therefore, public participation throughout the week is essential as DDI and the OCVB (and other community stakeholders) work to create a well-defined image for the city of Oxnard that builds upon where the community is now and provides a concrete direction and action plan for the future.
The first opportunity for public participation is an on-line survey on the OCVB website http://www.visitoxnard.com. This survey will provide DDI with essential information and serve as part of the foundation upon which the brand is built. The survey is available online now until the end of the month.
