A heavy-hitting group of conservative lawyers led by Ken Starr, Ed Meese is jumping to the defense of a Democratic trial lawyer and major John Edwards backer. Why? Because it could be a way to undermine campaign-finance laws.

Perhaps a philosophical reconciliation is to allow a candidate to raise as much as they like from anyone they like, however their opponent would get public matching funds to essential neutralize the influence of the special interests. After a while special interests may just give up wasting money to try and buy favors from legislators.

Here's a proposition. I bet if you invite neighbors to your house for a discussion of upcoming Wisconsin campaign finance reform legislation, you wouldn't get many takers. How about if you offered them $100 to come? Now that would get their attention and, I predict, their attendance.

If this disturbs you then take a few minutes to call your congressperson and ask them to co-sponsor Fair Elections Now Act HR 1826 and Fairness and Independence in Redistricting HR 3025.

Public Campaign Action Fund It is with great sadness that we bid goodbye to Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) who died late last night at his home in Hyannisport.

As someone who grew up in Massachusetts, I know that his passing will leave a great void - he was a compassionate, strong leader who always sought to do right by his constituents.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and memories of Senator Kennedy.

I admire the intentions of Americans for Financial Reform
But I wonder if they may be missing an opportunity of addressing a more core problem.
As long as special interests have more influence on representatives than the public interests we will have this problem in every area of public policy.
Please consider broadening their mission to join with other reform groups that want to neutralize most special interests in all areas of government.

I propose that those of us who are upset with this situation call their Congressman and ask them to support The Fair Elections Now Act (FENA) that sets up publicly financed campaigns and helps to neutralize the influence of special interests. And Fairness and Independence in Redistricting Act (FAIR) that mandate non-partisan redistricting commission that will make elections more competitive.
