POZ Magazine Housing Works kicked off its annual four-day fund-raiser Fashion for Action on Thursday, November 19, with a silent auction and sample sale. The Manhattan event was cochaired by designer Derek Lam and reality TV star Olivia Palermo and sponsored by Essence magazine. More than 150 top designers donated a combined $1 mil...lion worth of merchandise that was sold at 50 to 70 percent off retail prices. Designer labels that went for much less included Balenciaga, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, DVF, Fendi, Gucci, Paul Smith, Ralph Lauren and Yves Saint Laurent.

The opening night benefit was held at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City. Fashionistas had the opportunity to bid on silent auction items at the cocktail party and get a sneak peak of the items for sale at a VIP event across the street at Housing Works’ Chelsea thrift shop location. The sample sale was open to the public until Sunday, November 22.

Housing Works is the nation’s largest grassroots AIDS service organization and provides lifesaving services such as housing, food, medical care, HIV prevention and job training to more than 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.

POZ Magazine It might be wintertime outside, but summer camp was the theme of One Heartland’s cocktail fund-raiser for the Birch Family Camp, a retreat for New York City children and families living with HIV. The event, held Friday, November 20, at Open House Lofts in Manhattan, included a cocktail reception, s’mores made indoors o...ver candles, music and dancing by DJ Stacey Stylez and a raffle of swanky prizes.

The event’s proceeds go to the Birch Family Camp, a free weeklong summer retreat in the Hudson Valley that annually hosts about 90 low-income families (200 people) from New York City that have members living with HIV/AIDS. Throughout the year, the nonprofit organization helps people connect with medical information and deal with HIV disclosure, prevention, education, testing and related issues.

One Heartland, a national nonprofit group that helps children and families affected by HIV/AIDS, runs a camping and care facility specifically for this community. It's called Camp Heartland and is in Minnesota.

After almost 30 years of awareness of the AIDS virus, I am baffled, shocked, and saddened that men and so many women are still getting infected. There is still no cure- only treatment.

Wow. I can't believe it's been ten years since that cover story came out. Stephen and Hush were very courageous to share their lives with the world. I think of Stephen often and wonder what miraculous things he would be doing today if he was still here.

Defined as \'a mark of shame, disgrace or discredit,\' stigma has long plagued HIV/AIDS. It is one of the defining characteristics of the disease, differentiating it from its biologically-parallel-but-socially-altogether-different retroviral kin: hepatitis, herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV).

I have always disclosed in order to nullify the stigma, as well as to be "show & tell" at a UF epidemiology class. Shame on anyone who treats us as damaged goods and as "less than".
I've imagined south Fl to be more open (the grass is greener and def gayer!) but apparently I'm wrong. Keep your channel and heart open. We aren't alone.
