Parent Teacher Association Backlash against over-parenting...aka "helicopter parents?"

Source: www.time.com
Overparenting got way out of control in the past generation. But now a band of rebels is trying to restore some balance and sanity to family life and help bring all those anxious helicopter parents down for a soft landing

I cannot believe that "over-parenting" is a greater issue to be addressed than "under parenting." Is it just too easy to ask plugged-in parents to step down a little than to sound accusatory to the parents that don't plug-in and should do some major stepping up? Sounds like playing it safe to me...

Some of you sound confused about what over-parenting is.

Over-parenting does not prepare our children to live successful, independent lives. It is not about ensuring the safety and success of our children. Parents must allow their children room to make decisions, while offering guidance. We do our children a great disservice by making all of their decisions from an early age; thereby, rendering them incapable of facing real life. I have heard reports of parents calling professors at colleges to complain!

An example of over-parenting: A mother that I know filled out her then 17 year-old, very intelligent daughter's job application to an ice cream parlor because, "Your handwriting is not very neat."... Read More

Over-parenting is about the parent's need to control not about what is best for the child.

And Betty - I lived in NY for 45 years and have yet to find a food service worker that if you asked them, wouldn't mind cutting the apple for your child. If you school is only offering full fat free Italian dressing and your child doesn't like it, ask the kitchen to order other options. The flavor of the original article was that a bunch of 5th ... Read Moregrades made a petition and forced a changed. What the posts have turned into is an attack on food service. The Food Service Personnel and the food they are required to serve are not the problem. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem - and I wake up every day making a difference in the lives of the 843 children I serve and I am proud of the food we offer and if I wasn't I would find a solution and advocate on behalf of the children and not point the finger at someone who is only doing their job.

In addition, if your district is not willing to spend the money for better food choices, learn how to fill out a grant application. There are more and more grants available to communities interested in wellness and healthy alternatives. Do something other then complain that everybody else is doing nothing to fix it.
