It depends upon how serious it is and how you define "relationship". Teen romances often don't last long enough for you to develop a relationship even if you wanted to. I do think it is important though for you to know your teen's significant other enough to talk with them and to get a sense for what they're like but this is true for any of ... Your teen may not want you to develop a relationship with their boy or girlfriend because he might consider it infringing on his privacy and his life outside the home..

It can turn ugly when the couple breaks up and the parents try to "encourage" them to get back together because they liked the boyfriend/girlfriend so much. (I saw this happen with my daughter's best friend and her parents.) Parents need to stay objective enough to support their child if/when there is a break-up.
