On his auto ins, he could have paid $15 ish a year. WAY cheaper, but he didn't know. If you owe more than blue book value, purchase GAP coverage on your AUTO POLICY so in the event of a total... loss, the ins co will pay off your bank loan too, if you owe more than the car is worth.
