Virginia Kikis

Virginia Kikis Hi Penguin group, I have been looking for an editorial assistant position for a year. The last time you had an open position was in May of 09. I no longer qualify for most interships because I am out of school . My resume is filled with temp and internship positions in publishing yet I can't get an interview for the co...untless jobs I've applied to. Why can't I get my foot in the door? Can you tell me what I can do to stand out to Penguin or to any other company? Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi Virginia,

We have had open editorial assistant positions since May. As we've mentioned before, we can't give feedback on an individuals application. One point of general advice I can give is to do as much research as possible on the imprints the position works with, as well as the publishing house the position is in. In your cover letter, ... See Morewrite not only why you want to work at that particular publishing house, but why you are passionate about the books that imprint publishes.

Thanks for your interest in Penguin, and best of luck to you!

Dulce If I plan to apply to the summer internship, should I send supplement materials, like a letter of recommendation apart from the cover letter and resume?

Hi Dulce,

Any supplemental materials to the cover letter and resume will neither help nor hurt you. Thanks for asking!

Brittany

Brittany Hello!
I sent my cover letter, resume and a small portfolio sample to Penguin two weeks ago over email as my application for a Spring 2010 Design Internship. I haven't heard anything back yet, however and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to receive a confirmation email or if one is only contacted if there is interest. Or... maybe I sent it to the wrong place? Thanks!

Katherine

Katherine Hello,

I am a senior and have applied for both the internship program in the past and now have sent applications for full-time positions, since I will be graduating in May. Are graduating seniors even considered for full-time positions yet? Or should I just stick to applying for an internship?

Thanks!

Hi Katherine,

Applying for full-time positions with us now when you are graduating in May is too soon, as we are usually looking to fill the open positions as soon as possible. I recommend applying for jobs with us approximately 3 weeks prior to when you can start working - for example, if you plan on going on vacation after you graduate you should factor that in to your time-frame.

Olena Lobach

Olena Lobach Hello,
The Catalog Coordinator (Viking) vacancy is no longer listed on your website; does it mean you have found someone or are now in a process of reviewing applications? In general, when a position is posted, do you review applications continuously as they are received or wait until a certain cut-off date to review applications all at once?
Thank you!

Olena

Hi Olena,

The Catalog Coordinator position is in the final stages of recruitment. The answer to your other question is, it varies! Ususally, we do review applications as they come in, but not always.

Tijana Salaj

Tijana Salaj Hi,
I'm from Croatia and finishing my MA in English. I was an intern this summer in a publishing company and was wondering if you have any career programs for newly graduates, such as young professionals. I'm asking cause I would really love to work in a publishing company and wanted to know do I need to apply for a spe...cific position listed on the web or just any open job, and do I have a chance for employment since I'm an international applicant. Thanks.

Hi Tijana,

We don't have any programs that are specific to new graduates, although new graduates can participate in our internship program. We prefer that you apply for specific posted positions as opposed to a general submission, and please see our FAQ section in regards to international applicants.

Carol Hi, I want to apply for a summer internship for 2010, but unfortunately, my school (UCLA) has finals week the week the internship starts. Is there any way around this, or should I not bother applying?

Hi Loicia,

If your school has classes on copyediting or proofreading I think that would be very beneficial to you. Another idea is to get involved in your school newspaper or literary magazine for more practice. Internships in copyediting are of course great too!
