Glenn, your questions is a valid one, however, a better approach would be to ask "how can I position my portfolio to take advantage of the growing popularity of Nat Gas? As with any product, someone will benfit by the sale and distribution of it. It only makes sense to limit our use of foreign oil and continue to develop a domestic alternative. In full disclosure I own shares of CLNE and believe the Pickens Plan will not only benefit myself, but the nation as a whole.

As discussed in previous posts, natural gas is only marginally better than diesel and markedly worse than biodiesel as a transportation fuel. The largest exporters of oil to the US are Canada and Mexico (countries that do not like us...). As for pricing, Tudor Pickering Holt & Co. (TPH) foresees a doubling in gas prices in 2010.

The exploitation... Read More of natural gas is best justified by its use in power generation, where it can have a huge environmental impact, with minimal infrastructure investment and no change to vehicles.

When comparing the alternative uses of natural gas, power generation is by far the best for the US. We have a biofuels alternative for transportation fuels, but we are missing a bridge between coal and renewable electricity generation.

The Pickens Plan - which has largely concentrated on reducing our reliance on foreign oil - has always promoted utilizing “anything America” to generate electricity, as well as adding insulation, weather stripping and energy efficient machines and appliances in commercial buildings and homes.

Natural Gas for power generation would be an immediate use with HUGE environmental impact and little infrastructure and no vehicle costs.

Natural Gas is a bad option for transportation with a high infrastructure costs, high cost for vehicle modifications and higher GHG and pollution than biofuels.

If TPP wants to get the best use from natural gas, the push should be for power generation.

very little infrastructure cost to convert fleet vehicles that return to the garage everyday. over the road would require infrastructure, yes, but not vehicles that retuen to the garage at the end on the day. all those beer trucks, pepsi trucks, chip trucks, fedex and ups trucks would be excellent candidates. the USPS has used NG vehicles for over a decade

I have to second what Kailash said, at least in part, if we don't develop better energy infrastructure, we'll fall behind economically. Comma. Trade with foreign countries in the energy dept. helps to build better relations. I think we have more extensive economic ties abroad than people really realize, me included, it's hard to wrap your head ... Read Morearound some of this stuff, but we can still strive to take a positive role in the global mosaic by continuing to push for new development and inventions that will help to keep countries like China 'happening', if not happy, because some people and countries only see America as an economic opportunity, and forget that all those power company stock dividends come out of somebody's wallet who really might not have that much to spare.

Conservation is still a good message, as is energy independence, it's not an unobtainable goal, but it won't be easy, we've got a killer oil habit, and, if for no other reason, we should pursue energy independence and petroleum independence specifically in order to promote a better future, not just for this country, but also for oil-bearing nations who need to be seen as more than just a land-locked oil platform.

IMPORTING OIL, MONEY HURTS U.S. - CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

Trade deficit, budget deficit and debt. Completely different, yet quite related.

Debt is the equivalent of the mortgage, and for now I will assume the economy is/will be strong enough to pay the long term debt. TPP shifts $ from the oil companies to the gas companies, for no net gain. If the US government charged enough for the gas leases, then TPP would help shift $ from foreign government to US government, I did not see than on the plan. As a matter of fact most gas companies are opposed to higher gas lease royalty payments.

Budget deficit, the income is not enough to cover day to day expenses. Thse usually come from one time bad decisions like wars. And accumulated expenses like defense, social security and the like. In general it is easier to avoid bad decisions... TPP does not affect this area very much.... Read More

Trade deficit, the major sale point for TPP, we buy more goods than we sell. Warren Buffet, with 2 democratic representatives proposed Import Certificates in 2006 to curb trade deficit in an orderly manner. This was defeated by the republicans and has not come up since. Looks like congress does not feel that trade deficit is a bad thing. Import certificates would help TPP as imported oil would become more and more expensive.

Roman: By taking oil off the commodities markets, and the U.S. Government soliciting exclusive annual contract bids at fixed, lowest bidder prices, we would have foreign oil producers fighting one another to become our exclusive suppliers at the lowest possible cost. The only people who do not win are those who are speculative investors in oil or natural gas who want to change our dependency from one to the other.
