Pine Street Inn Thanks to everyone who called the Governor's office to save services for homeless individuals from major budget cuts. Unfortunately, the Governor cut homeless services by $2.7 million. Please take a moment to read about the impact these cuts will have on our community's most vulnerable members -- and how you can help.

Services for homeless individuals in Massachusetts have taken a big hit with the October 29 announcement from Governor Patrick’s office. The $2.7 million in cuts, slated to go into effect as of January 1, 2010, will have an inordinate impact on the most vulnerable men and women in Boston and through...

Pine Street Inn Because of the $600 million shortfall facing Massachusetts, Gov. Deval Patrick will be forced to make cuts to the budget. Affected budget areas include housing and human services — crucial funding for Pine Street Inn falls into that category. Call Gov. Patrick’s office at 617.725.4005 and leave a message asking that he does not cut funding to homeless shelters and housing programs for low-income individuals.

Source: www.pinestreetinn.org
Until now, the Governor and Legislature have maintained funding for programs for homeless individuals, and it would be devastating to thousands of people if these areas were cut. Please help us communicate that crucial message to the Governor today.

We must reach out to all our neighbors, friends, family, coworkers to please make the call ...it can make the difference in many lives. If you can't donate any $$$ please get on a campaign to encourage everyone you know to call the Governors office.

Pine Street Inn Read this New York Times article on a concerning national trend. At Pine Street, we've seen some of the victims of Boston-area foreclosures end up at the doors of our emergency shelter programs.

Source: www.nytimes.com
Over the last year, an average of 10 percent of homeless people became so through foreclosure, which was rarely a factor even three years ago.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Christopher is right -- housing is the answer to homelessness. In addition to emergency shelter, Pine Street has nearly 550 units of supportive housing for formerly homeless men and women. With the help of supporters, friends and neighbors, we really can end homelessness.

Pine Street Inn Read this Letter to the Editor from Pine Street Inn President Lyndia Downie about the solutions that Pine Street Inn has to offer to the problem of homelessness. For more information about the programs that are turning into solutions please check out our website at www.pinestreetinn.org.

NO ONE in Massachusetts should have to live outside because he or she can’t find housing (Oct. 9, editorial, “Cambridge: A tent city is a policy issue’’). Over the past three years the numbers of homeless living on the streets in Boston has decreased by 21 percent. ...

Go Lyndia. Amazing how "progressive" a concept it is: what do we need to end homelessness? Housing!

On September 26th, Pine Street Inn Staff Members and the Young Professionals Group held a Barbeque for residents of the Beals Street location in Brookline. Together, residents and volunteers combined to enjoy lots of tasty home-cooked classics. The residents and volunteers engaged in lively conversation all afternoon. ...There were stories shared about everything from the Sox/Yankees series to personal tales of triumph over homelessness. Throw in a friendly game of bag toss, and it was a truly delightful day for all parties involved. We can’t wait to plan it again for the Spring of 2010!

Please be on the lookout for information on a Holiday mixer that will be hosted by the Young Professional Group. If you are interested in joining the Young Professionals' Group, please email Eric Monty at eric.monty@pinestreetinn.org.
