Poynter Online Q: "I need to learn just the real technical 'how to use' basics of each social media site...are there any good video tutorials that exist?"

What I usually do when I want to learn how to do something social media related, I Google it. For example, if I want to learn how to make a Facebook Application, I just go to google.com and in the search box type "how do I create a Facebook application," and I'll find helpful existing videos and blog posts.

However, one disadvantage in doing this is that you need to filter through the search results. So, if you're looking for a definitive guide, you have many options.

Mashable also has a variety of great social media guides for journalists:

Poynter Online Q: We have both a station friend page and fan page- we find people don't engage on the fan page. And on the friend page, our updates show up in others timelines, so they want to engage. Thoughts?

Susan, good point on adhering to Facebook policy. :) Journalists as individuals can choose to have friend profiles and interact with their friends if they'd like, but many find the fan pages more effective.

Chris, there is a feature to hide or show more updates from your friends or fans if you scroll down to the bottom of your news feed.

I know journalists who have both friend accounts and fan page -- and update both with similar content. They encourage people to choose one or the other so people aren't bombarded with updates, so that might help with your duplication issue. ... See More

Great tips!

I actually have a couple of human friends on FB who also have proper fan pages for their organizational endeavors and profiles for those as well, and update all three with the same stuff. And then repeat that update in all three places three times in the course of a day. And tweet it from two or three accounts as well ....

I'm really beginning to understand why unfriend is the word of the year. (Maybe now FB will add it to the spellcheck dictionary!)
