With great fanfare I am proud to release our newest addition to Facebook Puzzles - Rush Hour! Rush Hour is a Thrift based puzzle where you test your inner road warrior to navigate the Bay area to reach your destination as fast as possible. Puzzlers are challenged to write their own client to connect to our server and get from one point to another, while navigating changing road conditions. What better way to celebrate our recently revived robot than to write your own automated guidance systems? Check it out here.

I wanted everyone to know that the robot issues appear to have been resolved. The two root causes were separate hardware failures; we not only had a corrupted disk partition but what appeared to be a bad RAM module. During this crisis, our operations guys were paragons of awesomeness, driving out to the robot's secret classified undisclosed location, and working on it despite not knowing the mortal danger they were in. They even let me skip the triplicate paperwork and were all around excellent guys. After doing some tests and verifying the new hardware, I realized the new RAM had not solved the stack corruption issues. It turns out it was not the hardware, but a problem with the robot's software. "Teddy" as we'll call him is built on top of a pretty standard LAMP stack with extensive security precautions (such as Asimov's golden Three Laws). Here at Facebook we've been working on improving that LAMP stack and one of those improvements interacted with Teddy's programming in an unexpected way. That has now been fixed, and Teddy is back at it!

Sorry puzzlers, but the robot problems (i.e. the failed hard drive) from last week were replaced by a new set of problems (i.e. bad RAM). I am working on getting that RAM replaced so the robot can work without suffering from the robotic equivalent of mad cow disease. I don't have an ETA yet, but I have made this the highest priority category we have to try to fast-track the fix.
In happier news, Rush Hour is going through its last stage of development. Rush Hour is intended to be a Thrift puzzle that bridges the gap in difficulty between Battleship and Dinosaur Island. Programmers are challenged to write a program that can automatically navigate their car over a map, responding to changes in the map due to traffic conditions. There is no right answer, only how long it takes you to get to your destination!
