Arizona could reap millions with revision in gaming policy | by Jay Heiler - Jul. 25, 2009 12:00 AM My Turn We've completed a 2009 legislative session which, though dominated by work on a balanced state budget, failed to produce one. Or, if you prefer, failed to produce one that Gov...

i promise u, if they would ever work a way to put any kind of casino out here on the west side of glendale/peoria/phoenix,etc, i.e, Indian, Legislative change, whatever.it might not be a total remedy to the "balance the budget blues" but it would sure make a significant dent. it's a totally untapped resource, like having a river in the desert but ... Read Morethe laws say u can't use the water...hey...don't we already have 1 of those..my point...there are several million people, west of i-17, 50-60% of whom, im sure would utilize a resort type casino in some way. ive seen it elsewhere. it works!

Its such a great way to get more people working again. I heard in Monte Carlo that one casino's house take covers more government funding than taxing.

It also offers more of a draw to the valley of the sun and is an alternative to NASCAR and Turf Paradise.

Race for New Revenues

Race for New Revenues So you can bet on the ponies while playing poker in the casino. But you can't play poker while watching the ponies at the track. Silly. And costing Arizona millions in much-needed revenue.

OTB and At Track Betting is great but, a while back, just after the NRA Convention, everybody was complaining about nothing for our visiting Convention goers to do downtown. Why doesn't Arizona wise up and allow gambling like Nevada? Put a Casino downtown around the Convention Center and elsewhere. Not just in Phoen...ix but scattered all over the state. Why is it that all of us 'White Folks' (no racial intentions meant) will go spend our money at all the Indian Casinos and then still whine about our State Budget being in such a mess? In simple terms, Indian smart, white man stupid. This extra revenue would help out all our problems. Underpaid and under-appreciated teachers, firemen, policemen and all others who fall into this category. Casino would really solve a lot of this states woes. And all this ranting form a non gambler. Only once in a Blue Moon. LOLRead More

I think slots at the racetracks is a good source for additional revenues. Millions of people go to the casinos to give the indians money, why not help support our firefighters and police force. Having slots at the racetracks is not going to make us another Las Vegas. The tracks already have gambling. My man enjoys the ...racetracks and I am totally bored there. But I like the slots and he does not. I'm sure there are plenty of people around like us. With slots at the tracks it would make everyone happy.Read More

Gregory Kischuk They say you can judge a society by how they treat their children. We need to protect our schools and health care for kids. Paying an extra penny or two on each sale won't break the bank for most of us. Lets just do it!

Race for New Revenues

Race for New Revenues wants to see more focus on finding NEW sources of revenue for Arizona. And no, that certainly doesn't mean creative new taxes.

Race for New Revenues

Race for New Revenues : Adding casino-style gaming at existing racetracks means $375 million in new revenue for Arizona in the first year alone. Poker + ponies = big win for Arizona.

Laura, it is actually our #1 objective to teach ALL the children in our classrooms how to READ. Out of the 36 students in my 1st grade classroom last yr, there were only 2 ELL (Early Language Learners) students. This is our #1 objective,,,,I forget where I read it but the state figures out how many prison beds they will need in the future by ... Read Morereviewing the childrens scores in 1st grade, if this is the case then our money needs to be focused on the education of children at primary levels. Not just clearing out the mexicans,,,and no I'm not a mexican....and I would attack the METH HEAD COOKING UP EVIL IN THEIR LABS AND trying to push it on our youth. before I would go figuring out which mexicans stay or go. :)

Summer, I wasnt saying take money from the children. I have two children in the public school system in Arizona. I love and have great relationships with multipal teachers, and staff all over Southern Arizona my point is not that teachers and schools are not inportant and I have no problem with Mexicans. Half of my Family are Mexican Americans. Not... Read More illeagals. There is a difference and my point was when there are 25 students in a class and 5 are illeagal that is 20 parents who work hard and pay the taxes that pay for the schools and teachers and 5 that do not but they still need an education and I dont know what makes you think illeagals no matter where they r from r not METH HEADS over here cookin it up to give to your students . All I want is Arizona to have a better educational system I want the money to go where it needs to go and I like most teachers I know want a better standard for our children. I just wont say I will vote for something till I read the whole damn thing thats all.

I think its a great idea! I think the men and women who are fire fighters and police officers lay their life on the line to help poeple and should make far more then they do! while I respect and admire teachers I do not feel they should be thrown in this group as it is a education cost not public safety and while I wil...l gladly pay more tax and vote to approve these funds for the poeole who are protecting me and my family every day I feel Arizona needs to refom our education system and over the many years I have spent volunteering in schools I can tell you throwing money at the staff isnt going to fix it. I want to see accountability and reward system put in place.Read More

I went from 15k one yr to 15.9k the next and 16.k then when the budget cuts happened I kept my job (YAYYYY!!!) but voluntarily got cut back down to 15k. So over the course of 4 yrs I am still making the same as I was on my first day of work....Imagine you worked above and beyond....AND ACTUALLY HAD A PASSION FOR WHAT YOU DO...and your boss ... Read Morenever acknowledged you for it with a lil' extra compensation....Would you quit to explore other options? Most of us stay because we care...and sorry to say but volunteering in a classroom is NOT the same as running a classroom. More teachers in the classroom IS the solution....One teacher in a classroom to 36 kids? They are just disciplining all day...constantly deviating from instruction to discipline children, they're NOT taking in any information...Now 3 teachers to 36 kids is a classroom of high educational quality....If you had kids in elementary be it public or private, which situation would you prefer your child be in?

First of all, I commend you for your work. I have a best friend that is a teacher and the pay doesn't even come close to what you have to be up with. We need to look at the family unit these days. Discipline starts at home and too many people have too much on their plates to truly raise their children. I think they send them to school for ... Read Moresomebody else to worry about. Sad thing!! I think teachers work their butt off and when those children don't excel its blamed on the wrong people, THEIR PARENTS NEED TO BE MORE INVOLVED IN THEIR EDUCATION.Nobody blames the parents for not helping do they????
