There was a recent article that I posted on my website discussing this. just look at the ASU students. I would bet that fewer students brought vehicles this year because of the light rail.

While working in Chicago, I was a happy user of public transportation because it was cheap and convenient. I also noticed that I walked a lot more, and regarded a mile as a very doable distance.

Now that I live in the far West Valley, I don't walk nearly as much. I believe public transportation options encourage walking...

Scott, what you say is ssooo true. In general, people in Arizona feel like a 1/4 or 1/2 mile walk is far yet when we we visit New York or San Francisco etc people don't think twice about walking a mile, or more. I hope you get back to Tempe one day, it is a bummer not seeing you around as much. :-)
