Reading Rockets Incorporate literacy into your everyday life for National Family Literacy Month! http://ow.ly/zWXe

Source: ow.ly
The number one thing, in my opinion, that families can do together to promote literacy is to read aloud. Consider hosting a family reading night once a week. Each week rotate family members to choose a book to read aloud. If you have children who aren’t of reading age, allow them to pick out the ...

Reading Rockets Can babies begin to develop language in utero? How about cry with an accent? A new study says yes: http://ow.ly/zWSp

Source: ow.ly
A new study reveals that the melody of a newborn's cries seems to be influenced by the sound of the parents' native tongue. The findings suggest that crying infants may be imitating the patterns of the language they heard before they were born.

Combination is the best. Textbooks with cds. Carrying heavy books can mess up your back, but I still love the feel and smell of a new textbook!

I love reading lying down or sitting up depends on my mood or the ambiance of my room. I like to imagine and get my self flowed-in with the story. I cannot do all that while straining my eyes in the computer. I like my children and students to enjoy reading comfortably. Flipping the pages of the book with excitement and enthusiasm.

Reading Rockets New bill proposed to replace key federal literacy programs. What do you think about the proposal? http://ow.ly/zSKi

Source: ow.ly
Long-awaited legislation to replace three federal reading programs—Early Reading First, Reading First, and Striving Readers—was introduced Nov. 5 by U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and would authorize $2.35 billion in funding to improve reading and writing in kindergarten to 12th grade.

Coming up with a new title does not make a successful program. Reading First obviously was not implemented or we would not have all these students who are functionally illiterate!

Reading Rockets Make this holiday season a literary season! Buy Books for the Holidays — a new campaign from the book blogging community: http://ow.ly/zwZk

Source: ow.ly
It's that time of year! The Halloween decorations are getting packed away, and the stores have turned their full attention to Christmas. Plans are frantically being made to have the perfect holiday season, and we are all examining our budgets to figure out how we're going to make the dollars stretch...

Already started my holiday purchases - as a children's librarian, elementary school reading specialist and grandmother of two little girls (ages 1 and 2), I highly recommend the following:
Monsters Don't Eat Broccoli by Barbara Hicks
I Always, Always Get My Way by Thad Krasnesky
Twenty-six Princesses by Dave Horowitz
Who Ate All the Cookie Dough? by Karen Beaumont... Read More

These books are highly amusing for both children and the adults who read them. They sneak in tons of phonemic awareness and letter knowledge, and there are many opportunities to engage in dialogic reading while you laugh with your little one.

Reading Rockets How to use Elkonin Boxes to build phonological awareness: http://ow.ly/xory

Source: ow.ly
Why use Elkonin Boxes? They help students build phonological awareness by segmenting words into sounds or syllables, learn how to count the number of phonemes in the word (not always the number of letters), and better understand the alphabetic principle in decoding and spelling.

I use them with my first graders in Title 1. Today it was very helpful for me to show students who didn't understand the concept of the "first" or beginning sound in a word or the "last" or ending sound in a word. My S.P.I.R.E. training has taught me that struggling readers need lots of concrete examples.

I want my kindergarten Title 1 students to start distinguishing between word, syllable and sound. This will help. If I use it with only one syllable words, I hope those concepts won't get confused. Any other ideas?
