Alanna Smith

Alanna Smith I have a question: my school is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday. I am 5'4 and weigh 117 pounds. I was wondering if I weigh enough to donate blood? This would be my second time.

According to posts below (from Nov 12th), female students (and others under the age of 19) under 5 foot 6 need to weigh 124 lbs. It also says to call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE to learn if you are eligible under the new guidelines.

Jessica

Jessica This may be a silly question, but what should I eat/drink before donating blood? The first time I donated, I was fine. The second time, I nearly passed out, so I think I could use a bit of advice. How do YOU prepare for a donation?

I make sure to drink plenty of water before a donation. As far as food, I just eat normally... I try not to miss a meal before donating. I've never had a problem.

That happened with me as well, but the first time my iron level was also a lot higher than the second time so that could be the reason...All I can say is drink a lot of water and eat foods high in iron content or even take iron supplements...I know you hear the same thing from the nurses but that's the only advice I can give.

Eeva Inkeri Marenbach

Eeva Inkeri Marenbach I have donated blood for about 40 years. I feel good if my blood can help someone. It also feels good to renew my own blood supply every three months. I have heard it's beneficial to one's health to donate!

Ken Baldwin I never really thought about the need for blood until my son needed a transfusion on the day he was born. I've been donating regularly ever since. I'll get my 9 gallon pin on Monday :^)

I am a drive coordinator in Elwood Ne. I have leukemia and know firsthand how important donors are. I am asking for all of you to help me by voting daily through Dec. 1st. Please donate a few minutes daily to help me!!
I have entered a contest to get my dental work done. I am sending you the link to vote on a Daily b...asis. The chemo has ravaged not only my nerves and muscles but skin, bones, and teeth. I took a bite of a soda cracker and chipped a tooth. A couple of weeks ago a chunk just fell out without me eating anything. I have so many sharp edges poking my tongue and inner cheeks that it is very painful. If you would do this and pass it on to all of your email and Facebook friends it would be wonderful. Thanks so much for helping me!! Have a great Day!!

Sabrina Johansen Quick Had a slight reaction for the first time ever after last donation, but none after today's donation. Must have been a fluke. I shall return in 8 weeks to give another pint!

I've always wanted to donate blood but I never seemed to be available in the past; however I believe maybe it was fate because the oppurtunity has finally presented itself through my first born child. My daughter started kindergarten this year and the school has an annual blood drive in memory of a teacher's child who ...had died a long time ago of cancer - today a form came home with my 5 year old's folder and it was a simple piece of paper asking for people to set up appointments to donate. I went online and set up an appointment immediately. There are two personal reasons I'm doing this; one is that my daughter will get a special certificate signed by the CEO of the Red Cross of Connecticut and because I was born 9 weeks early and without several blood transfusions shortly after my birth I would have died within hours.Read More
