Congressman Gary Ackerman Yesterday, I joined with the NYC Parks Commissioner and community leaders in Jamaica Estates to plant the first of hundreds of trees and shrubs that will green the Grand Central Parkway using federal funding that I secured. We got soaked from the rain, but the water will be good for all that foliage.

Congressman Gary Ackerman Thanks to North Shore Animal League of Port Washington for their act of compassion.

Congressman Gary Ackerman Yesterday, I presented more than $139,000 in federal funds to the Williston Park Fire Department for critical protective gear and $100,000 to the Dominico-American Society of Queens for their core Community Education and Services program including ESL classes and after-school programs. Congressman Gary Ackerman I was proud to stand behind Speaker Pelosi today – figuratively and literally – at the announcement of the Affordable Health Care for America Act, which will bring affordable health care to tens of millions of Americans, preserve Medicare for future generations, and improve the quality of health care in America.

Norma Wesley Medicare signed me up whether I liked it or not. When I retired, my place of business still carried me re medical as part of the retirement package. I didn't want part B because additional funds would be taken out of my check, so I refuses part B. Because I was 65 all medical bills when to Medicare instead of my pr...imary; therefore, I was receiving the bills because medicare was rejecting them; I was fighting this on a monthly basis; I finally gave up and joined Part B. To me I had to take this additional expense or else. I already had a primary as well as additional coverage from an outside company; it seems that my "job" and I are paying for the same thing!

Congressman Gary Ackerman Last night, I attended a reception at the White House to celebrate the enactment of landmark legislation that I co-sponsored that adds disability, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity as protected classes under the Hate Crimes law.

Patricia Fordyce Demopoulos I am writing to you to invite you to a local event. My family and I will be participating in the JDRF walk this Sunday October 25th at Flushing Meadow Park. My grandson, James Mustac, of Flushing, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes this February when he was just 21 months old. We are walking to raise awareness and in... hope of finding a cure for this disease. We have a large team of walkers, nearly 50 strong, and have raised thousands of dollars for this cause. Our group consists mostly of Flushing residents, most born and raised here. Many of James' loved ones will walk that day, from ages 1 to 81, even his great-grandparents. Four generations will be represented in our group. I think it would be a great opportunity for you to get out and meet with citizens who have opinions on health care reform. We would be honored if you would attend this event that is so important to us. Thank you. Patricia Demopoulos

Congressman Gary Ackerman Learn about America’s new elite vine-fighting forces! Here’s a link to Newsday’s video report on the project to save Great Neck parkland by enlisting AmeriCorps volunteers and vine-hungry goats to remove the vines that are overrunning the 175 acre public park. I contacted the White House this summer to request AmeriCorps volunteers to help with the task.
