As many of you know I lost one of my best friends, Ryan Means (pictured on the left) this past July. This is an online auction to help benefit his three girls he left behind, his wife Heather, and his two daughters Elizabeth and Sophie. I hope you will please take the time to look at the link and even possibly donate ...and item.

Ryan Means passed away this past July, leaving behind his beloved wife Heather and 2 young daughters, Elizabeth and Sophie. Born in Atlanta, Ryan attended the University of Colorado and University of Georgia. After one of his best childhood friends and a fraternity brother from Colorado, Adam White, was killed in the World Trade Center on 9-11, Ryan searched the hospitals and posted photos around the entire city for days. Ryan needed to do something for his friend AND his country-so he enlisted in the Army at age 31. He worked his way up to Special Forces--a Green Beret; He made us feel safe, knowing he was there protecting us.

While he was stationed in Iraq he became jaundiced and discovered he had advanced bile duct cancer. He was flown to Walter Reed hospital where he was given a slim chance of survival and needed a very invasive surgery to remove the cancer. He then was airlifted to Sloan Kettering in NYC. His family flew to be with him including his wife, who was 9 months pregnant and his 18 month old daughter, Elizabeth. While Ryan lay in one hospital, Heather checked in across the street to deliver their baby. An Army Special Forces liason officer pulled out Ryan's IV's and wheeled him into Heather's delivery room just in time for the birth of their second daughter, Sophie Ryan Means. His days with Sophie were precious--full of hope and determination. Ryan was an incredibly proud father--who loved his girls more than anything; but as hard as he fought (and he fought hard!) Ryan, surrounded by family, died from complications to surgery.

Ryan never quit, never lost his sense of humor and most importantly never stopped loving life. He lived life to the fullest which keeps his family and friends going and hoping to live like he did every day. Ryan will be remembered as a sweet son, a loving husband, a doting father, a wild-man brother, an unwavering friend, and a fearless soldier. But most of all, we will remember Ryan as our hero. Ryan ended all of his letters with a simple thought: "Keep on rockin' in the free world."

Bio: Micol and Ricky Davis, and whomever happens to be their drummer at any given time, play swampy, gospel-tinged southern soul-blues. Micol displayed the full-bodied vocal fire of Janis Joplin, while she rattled and slapped her tambourine with the ecst...asy and know-how of a black gospel choir member. Ricky played muscular, stabbing figures on acoustic guitar and Dobro, and the two joined in close, soul-searing harmonies like only intimate kin can. When the couple sang an A Capella rendition of the old gospel number "Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down," the result was a heady blend of otherworldly longing and this worldly passion, bodies swaying and tambourines shaken emphatically.Read More

Bio: Since its inception by Drew Carman and Dylan Solise in early 2006, The Corduroy Road has melded bluegrass, Americana, folk rock, and old-time country with the rawest of live performances. The two, born and raised in the Central Kentucky Bluegrass Re...gion where they learned their craft, now reside in the musical gem of the southeast: Athens, GA.

With the addition of John Cable on drums, Elijah NeeSmith on bass, and Cameron Thomas on electric guitar, The Corduroy Road quickly gained a reputation in Athens as an up and coming band on the scene after sharing the stage with such notable bands including The Avett Brothers, Paleface, The Packway Handle Band, Ian Thomas, Langhorne Slim, Trampled by Turtles and more.

Athens Banner Herald called them “bluegrass rockers…influenced by old time country and Americana, while the live performances exude the energy of punk rock.”

In November of 2008, The Corduroy Road entered the studio of local legend John Keane (Widespread Panic, REM, BR549, Uncle Tupelo) to record their debut LP, Love Is a War, released in Summer 2009. The title track appeared on the AthFest 2009 compilation CD that is released each year on Ghostmeat Records in conjunction with the prestigious arts and music festival, AthFest. After an exciting and fruitful summer, the band continues to tour the Southeast with plans of expanding into even more regions in 2010.

Bio: Yes, I play music, and yes I make a living doing this. No, I am not the richest man out there and some months I make more than others, but I am blessed to get to do what I love and what countless others love to do, make music, and that is all that m...atters to me. I am very passionate about what I do and I work very hard at it. I write a lot of music, but about 75% of the songs I write I will never end up using and noone will ever hear them, but that is all good, I believe that the more you write the better your songwriting will get. I also believe that as you grow older and experience more and more in life, you mature as a writer. My favorite thing to do is sit alone in my room writing, me and the guitfiddle, just ask all those that are closest to me! I am a hermit that hides out late at night to write when you put a guitar in my hand. This lifestyle is not always easy, sometimes it can be very depressing and emotional, but I believe that these are the moments in life that make you grow as a person. I was talking to a good friend and musician, Micah Dalton, about the hard times we both have experienced on the road and it is very encouraging to have close friends that are going through some of the same struggles. I am about to finish up my 4th album which I am really stoked about. My goal is to top the last record off, you know, make each record that much better then the last, to grow as an artist with my writing and creating. Even if it does not do well, know that I love it and we worked hard on it. I am about to do a huge name dropping session so bare with me and I apologize for my actions for I know how terrible it is to name drop especially being in the entertainment business, but at the same time I have to give credit where credit is due. I worked with Grammy Award winning producer Mitch Dane (Jars of Clay, Bebo Norman) in Nashville, TN and we had a great time. He was great to work with and I know we came up with a excellent album. Obviously, I played guitars and sang the songs, we had Aaron Sands (regular Nashville studio musician) play bass, Andrew Osenga (of "Caedmon's Call") playing guitars, mandolin, and a few other instruments, Andy Hubbard (of "Little Big Town") on the drums, Matt Slocum (of "Sixpence None the Richer") playing cello, Andrea Zonn (violin player for "James Taylor") tracking the fiddle, Kenny Hutson (of "Vigilantes of Love") playing some mandolin and pedal steel, Ben Shive (who is a beast in Nashville because he is almost too talented for his own good) on piano, rhodes, organ, and accordion, good friend and musician Jon Black came in to play a little harmonica action for us, Mitch made use of his hands and shook the shaker and hit the tambourine, and three of us tracked a nice little clapping section, oh yes, we have a clapping section on this album. Matt Odmark (of "Jars of Clay") will be mastering the album as well. So there is the cast and crew and this new album which I have chosen to call "LOVE & WAR" and we are looking at releasing this with Bad Boy records (joking) on January 30th, 2007. Jason Harwell (of "Rebuilt Records") and I are doing the album art/cover together, A to Z Media in New York will be pressing it, and Awarestore, cdbaby, and other online distibutors will be selling it online as well as iTunes and the million other download services that have taken over the world of music in the past few years. I hope that you all enjoy this disc, I sure do, so maybe everyone else will, we will see.Read More

Bio: “Sometimes,” Corey Crowder says with a laugh when referring to his contemporary rocking, funky and melodic music, “I think I would have fit in better if I’d come up thirty years ago.” There’s irony in that statement. With over five million plays of ...the songs on his MySpace page, major television placements of his songs, and recording and publishing contracts now in hand, Corey, at age 25, is virtually a model of how to commence a musical career, 21st century style. Commentators have described his music variously as Southern rock, alternative country, funky storytelling, or even jam band. By any name, it recalls roots rock and soul sounds of the sixties and seventies—updated for today.

“That’s the music I was raised on,” explains the singer-songwriter who grew up in a small town between Atlanta and Athens, GA. “Creedence and Bill Withers...Waylon Jennings and Bob Dylan. When I first started playing I was sort of running from that—a kid just trying to be different. I was into metal for awhile, and when I was first in college, I really tried to get into indie rock—but I quickly went back to the music I grew up on and always loved, for all the emotion and feeling behind it. It’s soul music.”

That legacy of soul asserts itself mightily in the deep and engaging music from this gifted performer and writer. From the earliest days singing his own songs solo in local clubs at 18, to touring across the continental U.S. with a practiced band behind him has all led him to the November 11, 2008, release of his striking Gold and the Sand album. Listeners can hear Corey speaking from his own soul on this record. It’s in the confidential whisper with which he sometimes sings, in the sound of the instrumentation, with its rock influences, strings and horns, and in the lyrics he writes, that bring it all together.

After high school, Corey followed his high school sweetheart (now his wife) to Greenville, SC, where she attended Furman University. It was there he set about producing his two homemade collections of songs that turned out to have remarkably broad appeal. Corey first reached national attention when his self-penned song, “Here’s Looking at You Kid,” was spotted on his MySpace page by producers of the MTV reality series The Real World. They employed it to augment the sort of emotional moment audiences remember. “They played it over the finale of the last show of the season, with the couple hugging at the airport!“ Corey recalls. “And that brought a lot of recognition.” More of Crowder’s early tunes appeared on such TV series as Bad Girls, The Biggest Loser, and One Ocean View, and total listens on his MySpace page skyrocketed into the millions. Sales of his early independent albums were boosted, too.

During those three years in Greenville, he assembled a backing band, bringing him one step closer to achieving his goal of a fuller and fully realized sound. “I’d been wanting to find a group of people who believed in the personal songs I wanted to do.” By the time he got to the studio in Seattle to meet with Aaron Sprinkle (producer of Gold and the Sand), Corey was confident about his vision and wanted a producer that would compliment this vision and further define his sound. In Aaron, he found just that. “Aaron didn’t want to change a thing about the songs—just work with me on the instrumentation. And that was very exciting.” Aaron took hold of Corey’s songs and brought them to life. He took old-school instrumentation techniques and altered them in such a way that ultimately became the perfect catalyst to bring out the new and fully developed Corey Crowder sound they had both been searching for.

The result of Corey and Aaron’s meeting is a set of twelve songs as broadly themed as something you would expect from Van Morrison, Tony Joe White or even Lynyrd Skynyrd for that matter—but with contemporary lyrics that aim to reflect today’s over-hurried world and the pressures brought about in meeting the expectations of a friend or spouse and in dealing with the notion of pride or of change.

For all the emotional power of his rock attack, his lyric writing has evolved into a new level of texture and maturity. The songs on Gold and the Sand have subtle shades of meaning that are developed through complex word choice and surprising twists and turns in his storylines. Being a contract writer for EMI in Nashville has given Corey the experience and tools he has needed to truly advance his lyrical abilities. This kind musical development is not always about technicalities or improved skills; it’s also about personal growth – an ongoing theme in Corey’s lyrics. Two songs on the new album speak to that even in their titles—“I’ve Become Something” and “Look How Far We’ve Come.”

“I’m finding,” Corey says, “ that your mid-twenties are really when you learn a lot about yourself, and ask the big questions. I really needed to write some songs about things I’ve never tackled before.”

He's certainly done that with the timeless and continually appealing songs on Gold and the Sand, and he does it with music that is delivered in a style that is as rooted as it is contemporary.

Bio:
Raised in a town where musicians are a dime a dozen Sara Jean Kelley stands high above the crowd. With a sultry voice, haunting lyrics, and an original sound, Kelley is carrying the torch for a new generation of Americana artists. She effortlessly bl...ends traditional country and bluegrass, with modern Americana. But this is to be expected from a girl who grew up listening to Bob Dylan and watching her mother Irene Kelley play on the world famous Grand Ole Opry stage.

Kelley’s voice runs barefoot through the audience, and before they know it, they want to strike out with her on the open road, and the road is something Sara knows a thing or two about. This was her home over the summer as she toured relentlessly around the country playing with artists such as Pure Prairie League, Emmylou Harris, and Sister Hazel as well as numerous festivals such as the Americana Music Festival, FemmeFest, Blues and Brews (Telluride) and Next Big Nashville. The sound drags people in as she performs in venues across the country, with her trusty 1969 Gibson B25 in tow.

With her sights set on recording a new record (a follow up to 2006’s “Dollhouse”) Sara has been writing relentlessly, on her own, as well as with Nashville songwriters Will Kimbrough, Neil Mason (of American Bang), and Sam Ashworth. Regardless of who she is writing with every song reveals a piece of her soul. It is impossible not to be moved personally by her music. The lyrics come from a place that everyone can understand, and are real in every sense of the word. Coming from a woman’s point of view, they are vulnerable and emotional yet maintain an aspect of strength that is missing from the feminine morale. That’s not to say men don’t relate; though very personal, her songs have a vast sense of universality everyone can appreciate.

Sara Jean Kelly’s ramblin’ days are far from over, she has some truths to tell, and the next one’s always just around the bend.
