Welcome to 2010! Now that 2009 is in the past, and in the spirit of the new year, we’d like to present our resolutions for 2010. While losing 20 pounds would be great for us personally, as a company our goals are a little different. ...

I have been working with Roots Magic 4 for a few weeks now. It is a big improvement to the program I had been using, Family Tree Maker. The Personal Historian program is also in my genealogy tool kit, as is GenSmarts. Thanks for your many efforts to make this a great program.

Glenn, were you able to pull your data from FTM into Rootsmagic? I'd love to switch, but I have many many images in my FTM file that I fear I can't get any program to import!

Roots Magic essential or RootsMagic 4?? Which one??

Donna, You want RM4. It has many more options. And you can't beat the price. Essentials is free, but is more limited. It is good for family members who aren't into research as much as we are. It is a good way to share info with and gather info from them. To print all of the reports, etc. you want RM4. Just one opinion from a user. :-)

Brian Potential Buyer Question - I've been reading through the posts, but have looked at ancestry.com, geni.com, and the PAF site. I'm guessing you all prefer this one, instead? I find the first two expensive and the latter a bit weak. If I buy this one, will I have the ability to send my tree to relatives to get them to ...fill in the blanks or will everyone that's interested have to buy this application, too? Cheers for any help. :)

Brian, RM has a new program called RootsMagic Essentials. Your relatives can download this program for free. http://www.rootsmagic.com/Essentials/ You can then e-mail them a GEDCOM file. They can make changes and e-mail it back to you. RM will let you sync the file into your database. Of course, you can still print charts and send them to relatives and get them to send them back. :-)

Joey Does anyone know if there is a way to sort the sources that you add for a person? I want them sorted according to date. They seem to stay in the order that I added them to the database. I need to be able to move them around so that they are chronological. Any ideas?

Renie I have Family Tree Maker software that I have been using for years. I would like to have my people numbered in my tree and am not sure how to do it. Does RM have a good system for that?

Go to "Tools" ... "File Options" ... "General" ... and you have an option to chose a number automatically given by RM4 as you enter a person (Record Number) ... or a number you assign yourself (Reference Number) ... or no number at all.

Charlotte Gifford Will I have worked with the new RootsMagic4 Program and find is is good. But I am disapointed that the Family Group print out part wastes paper and ink. Plus the option that allows my to print blank children so that I can add them if they are found. I have to print a new print out so I can see them. I like to print... everything on as few pages as I can. Ink and paper is not cheap.

RM3 had an option to print blank child records to fill the page. I haven't found this option yet in RM4. There are options to change the layout of the Family Group Sheet, though. Maybe an upcoming update will add the blank child records back as an option. :-)

Hope So. I would hope that they would make it so it prints the family notes and the endnotes one right after the other. It would take up less paper. They used to have the option to have them on a new page for not.

Charlotte, there is still an option to start the notes on a new page. You can also set the sources to print as footnotes instead of end notes so that they are at the bottom of the page as opposed to a new page. I think this will print the info continuously, as you want to do.

Joey A friend imported a GEDCOM from Legacy into RM 4. She has ended up with some duplicate facts. For example, an individual may have two birth facts, two death facts, etc. Is there an easy way to merge these duplicate facts? Or does she have to go through and delete one of them? Here's an additional issue: One of the... birth facts has part of her information; the other birth fact has different information for the same person. The duplicate facts may also have different sources attached to them. It seems that the birth info was split when importing into RM4. This is also true for the other duplicate facts (marriages, death, burial, etc.). Any suggestions? THANKS!

Joey, use the "Tools" tab, the merge option. There's a Duplicate search merge device.

Reubin, I think the "Merge" option allows you to merge people, or sources, or repositories. But I don't think it will allow you to merge individual facts for a single person. For example, if you have multiple birth facts for a person, I haven't found an option that will merge them for you. I think we have to change the info in the edit screen. ... See MoreI think my friend is going to have to manually clean up each person in her database. It isn't a matter of merging people, but of merging facts. If anyone else has a solution, let me know. Thanks!

Reuben Dunn Here's a question: I'm wondering if there's a way to link up Roots Magic with a non-LDS site. I've using the "New" FamilySearch without any problems, but am also using Ancestry.com as a back up, with great success I might add, and am wondering if there's a web setting for this....

Ancestry should be one of your choices on the WebSearch view. This view will also allow you to add custom search providers.

It work! The funny thing is that the tab was stairing me in the face all the time. There are so many goodies on this package that I really need to take the time to read the manual.....It's so easy to get caught up with the data entry.

This is one of the better purchases that I've made!

Claud, until you're able to access the "new" FamilySearch, I would paraphrase the reply that Joey Mimbs gave me.

"...[FamilySearch] should be one of your choices on the WebSearch view. This view will also allow you to add custom search providers."

In addition to Ancestery.com Claud, you can add the public FamilySearch web site onto the WebSearch tab.
