It is with a heavy heart that we congratulate our leader of the last 8 years, Jared Blumenfeld, on his new position as head of EPA Region 9.
We will miss his strong leadership and inspiring vision, but we are very proud to know that he will carry all of the great green work here in San Francisco to the Federal level.
All the best, Jared!

San Francisco's prestigious standing as one of the world's most beautiful cities belies its little-known transformational, ugly-duckling history as an unattractive and uncomfortable area to live in, into one of the world's most sought-after cosmopolitan addresses to call home. In its natural s...tate, San Francisco was a sandy wasteland, windswept and bereft of trees; hence its striking transformation is a testament to how its inhabitants have interacted with San Francisco' natural environment to create it into the city it is known today.
In "Our Better Nature: Environment and the Making of San Francisco," Professor Philip J. Dreyfus of the San Francisco State University recounts the history of San Francisco from an Indian village to a bustling metropolitan city, focusing on the interactions between the city and the land on how San Franciscans remade the landscape to fit their needs, and how their actions reflected their ideas about nature - the creation of Golden Gate Park, the Port, Hetch Hetchy, the Sierra Club, and later, the birth of the modern environmental movement.
Join Professor Dreyfus for an exploration of San Francisco's past, and a reassesment of our connection to the environment, and how we can redefine ourselves and our cities within nature.Read More

African-American cuisine, or "soul food" as it has been named in the 1960s, is equated with well-loved Southern-style comfort food such as fried chicken and collard greens, black-eye peas and sweet potato pie. But beyond the confines of these popular dishes lies a culinary history and rich heritage of a people that ha...s historically grown their own food, and through dints of gastronomic resourcefulness and creativity, transformed produce castoffs and least desirable cuts of meat into hearty, humble, and satisfying food fare.
The emergence of a food movement that embraces local, seasonal, and healthy eating has brought a generation of chefs who have redefined and elevated American regional cuisine into new culinary heights, and Bryant Terry, eco-chef, food activist and author, is among those who have taken a fresh, healthy reinterpretation of traditional and new soul food favorites.
Join Bryant for an informal discussion about the pleasures of food and eating in the black communities, along with a light cooking demonstration of a recipe from his new book, " Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy & Creative African-American Cuisine."
