Sunday: Classic Styling: The Golden Age of Egyptian Dance
Learn the soft and elegant styles of dancers from the silver... screen era of Egyptian dance, including Samia Gamal and Tahiya Karioka, as well as many others.
Sahra has performed and taught Egyptian-style Orientale and Folkloric dance on five continents. Originally from the Los Angeles, California area, Sahra lived, danced, and researched in Egypt from 1989 to 1995. Since then, she has been teaching and performing Egyptian and Folkloric dance around the world.
Sahra has been artistic director of Ya Amar! Dance Company since its conception in 1995, and a contributing choreographer to many European dance companies. She is also president of Layali Yasmine Productions (“Nights of Jasmine”), an independent recording and distribution label for Egyptian music, Middle Eastern dance performance and instructional videos. Sahra has academic degrees in both Dance & Cultural Anthropology along with a MA in Dance Ethnology from UCLA. She has given numerous lecture/demonstrations on Egyptian dance, costumes, customs, ritual and folklore to doctorate-level symposiums, university ethnic dance festivals and dance ethnology forums.

Aladin El Kholy is a world-renown Egyptian dance choreographer, performer and instructor from Cairo. Aladin began his professional career as a dancer in the famous Balloon Theatre in Cairo, where he was a member of the Hassan Afifi Group and won an award for best dancer in 1983. ...He holds degrees in sports education from universities in Cairo, Egypt and Bonn, Germany. Aladin has appeared on numerous Egyptian television programs, and regularly tours throughout the Gulf and Europe. In 1988, Aladin moved to Germany, where he directs and choreographs for his ensemble “El Mahalla - Ensemble Aladin.” In 2002, he opened a dance studio in Bonn, Germany, where he holds an annual Oriental Dance Festival that is attended by dancers throughout Europe and the USA. He is co-director of “Tanzproject,” a wonderful teaching project created to elevate and preserve Egyptian dance. “Tanzproject” is taught in conjunction with other master Egyptian instructors, including Aladin’s teacher, Hassan Affifi.
Aladin is also author of a soon-to-be-released book, “Egyptian Dance.” His classes are energetic and inspiring, and share the true essence or Egyptian dance.

Each year the South Silver Spring Neighborhood Association throws a block party celebratin...g the people, artists, musicians and merchants in and around our community. The event is free and offers something fun for everyone:
* Over 50 vendors selling everything from paintings, photography, jewelry and flowers to original t-shirt designs, candles and homemade bath products
* An international food court ranging from vegan baked goods and Italian home cooking to Indian and Southern BBQ
* Live music and entertainment acts ranging from 50’s rock to hip hop and flamenco to acoustic folk pop (and belly dance!)
