Annual Homecoming 5K Run/Walk Under New Management

Tie on your running shoes and stretch your legs, because the annual Homecoming 5K Fun Run/Walk is fast approaching. This year, the race promises to be more competitive and exciting than ever, as the projected number of participants i...s already close to 80. Prizes will be awarded in age categories to runners, walkers, and families who walk together, and T-shirts will be given to everyone who registers in advance.

The annual Homecoming 5K Fun Run/Walk will be a very different event from the one in years past, mainly due to the handling of the event by Assistant Professor of Physical Education Patricia Querry and her Sports Management class. When an e-mail was sent out to the SJC faculty over the summer asking if anyone was interested in taking over the event, Querry jumped on the opportunity.

"I really thought it would be a great project for my Sports Management class to work on," Querry said. "The students will really get a handle on the nuts and bolts of sports management and what it takes to plan a sporting event."

The class has been put in charge of just about everything the event entails, from making fliers and registration forms to planning the prizes. Querry and her class are strongly encouraging families to register and walk the 5K together. The first family to cross the finish line will receive a prize.

Kendra Illingworth, Director of Alumni & Parent Relations, is thrilled to have the support of Querry's class in planning the event.

"The class has been a great help," Illingworth said. "It's also exciting to see them get some hands-on experience with a real world event."

Registration for the run/walk begins at 7:30 a.m. CDT, and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. CDT, September 26. Participants should meet at the SJC Intramural Field between the apartments and Halas Hall. Saint Joseph's College Building to be Named in Honor of AIT Laboratories' CEO

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Saint Joseph's College will welcome Indianapolis entrepreneur and distinguished alumnus Michael A. Evans, Ph.D., founder, president, and CEO of AIT Laboratories, on Friday, September 25, 2009. Evans will be on hand for the d...edication of the Evans Arts and Science Building, named in his honor, on the campus of Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind at 11:00 a.m. CDT.

Evans will have the building named in his honor after years of generous donations to his alma mater, including a pledge to SJC's 21st Century Campaign, which raised more than $13.3 million for campus improvements and the College's endowment. "I wouldn't be where I am today without the strong education that Saint Joseph's College has given to me. I have been able to have a career in academia, science, and as an entrepreneur because of that education," said Evans. The Arts and Science Building was built in 1914 and is the home of the Theatre and the Robinson Memorial Library, as well the Music Department, computer and science laboratories, and classrooms.

Saint Joseph's College President Dr. F. Dennis Riegelnegg said that no praise was too large for Evans. "Dr. Evans has had and continues to have a tremendous impact on Saint Joseph's," Riegelnegg said. "His dedication to the College is paralleled by few."

In 2001, Evans started an exclusive partnership with Saint Joseph's College to create an internship program that has since placed 13 Saint Joseph's College students in internships. AIT Laboratories also employs six alumni full-time, as well as others from Indiana colleges and universities. "Saint Joseph's College gives students a well-rounded education that enables them to succeed in anything they chose to do in life. Students are able to see the bigger picture," said Evans. Employing Indiana graduates and keeping the highest achievers in the state, AIT has become known as one of the best Indiana employers.

Evans, a 1967 graduate in Biology and Chemistry, leads one of the nation's top pain management, forensic, clinical, and pharmaceutical testing laboratories. In 2008, Evans was named the "Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year" for the Midwest region. Evans has led AIT Laboratories through tremendous growth which earned the company the honor of being named "Small Business of the Year" and one of the "Best Places to Work in Indiana" by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. AIT was recently named to Inc. magazine's list of the top 5,000 fastest-growing, private companies in the nation and was ranked as the only Indiana company on the list of the top 100 health companies in the nation.
