  1. A wonderful new book about Emily Dickinson's poetry has just been published by UMass Press. It's by Cristanne Miller, author of *A Poet's Grammar* and other books--and editor of The Emily Dickinson Journal. This one is called *Reading in Time: Emily Dickinson in the Nineteenth Century.* Miller reads Dickinson's poetry as responding to 19th century culture, historical events, and the poetry and pro...se of her time. I'm only two chapters in so far, but already discovering all kinds of fascinating ideas, such as that "at least through 1865 Dickinson's poetic is more crucially attuned to the ear than to the eye." While the book is more for the obsessive fanatic (like me) than for a general audience, it has lots of goodies in it. More "bulletins from the front" when I get a chance! Susan SSee More
  2. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WALT WHITMAN: A while back 'Emily Dickinson' was a category on the TV show Jeopardy - and the answer to one of the questions was our birthday boy, Walt Whitman - here's the complete post, which may give you some hints as to Emily's reaction to Whitman - or perhaps not . . .
These were the questions in the Emily Dickinson category on the TV quiz shoe Jeopardy, courtesy of our FB-friends who watched for us.

Answers were provided for us by Jerome Charyn, author of The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson
*** Special Amherst Correspondent Susan Snively found the quote in Emily's letters that supports the  answer to Question #5 - it's below.

Manfred "Shotgun" Coen tries to infiltrate a human trafficking ring - it's a shot to redeem himself, but it could cost the blue-eyed cop his life.

Mary Narkiewicz - it's a different world from Emily's - a world Jerome Charyn saw when he drove around in the squad car with his brother, homicide detective (and Mafia specialist) Harvey Charyn. If you like Pulp Fiction, you'll love these ...books - written years before Quentin Tarantino's flick, but with the same sensibility. They are also the most politically UNcorrect novels you will likely come across. I LOVE 'EM! Hope you will - LenoreSee More
    • It's Wednesday, Anything Can Happen Day. First up, want to introduce you to our newest member - and brand new reader - my grandson, Maximus Tran Riegel. His message? "Hi, I'm Max. I'm three weeks old and I already love books. How old are you?"

    • THE SECRET GARDEN: Dear Friends, I heard from Emily Dickinson today and she asks us to visit her gardens - and to help her by working in them. Here is the invitation - I feel certain you are too well-brought-up to turn her down. Gracious me, what would Mrs. Dickinson think?
    • MEMORIAL DAY MESSAGE from our Amherst Correspondent says it best: "Memorial Day -- once known as Decoration Day -- was an important occasion years ago. It's sad that the day has become just another half (hearted) holiday. How can we carry the dead, in our hearts or memories when we didn't know them? In our imaginations, as Emily said, as if sitting beside them and witnessing their passage to another world." --Susan Snively

    • Emily loses popularity! Not our heroine, her name. It was number 1 for baby girls until 2007 - now it's ranked 6th. Elizabeth is 11th. Lavinia and my name, Lenore, do not appear in the top 1000 for any recent year - sigh.

Here are some of the worst baby names of all times:
