The Council for Secular Humanism Peter Rosenstein of the Campaign for All D.C. Families accused the church of trying to "blackmail the city."

Source: www.washingtonpost.com
The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homeles...

A judge has struck down a Christian-themed license plate that had been approved by the South Carolina Legislature.

John did answer the question nicely. We can't expect all religions to be treated equal by the South Carolina legislature. Ian, do you think they would approve a satanist license plate? Or would they approve a Rastafarian license plate?

The fact a state legislature has the time to approve license plates makes me question SC and how much work ... Read Morethey really do in that state to help the people.

Favoring any specific religion is illegal, and this is a sign the SC legislature favors Christianity, an obvious violation.

He responded, but didn't answer the pertinent question, which is, Was Christianity being given preferential treatment by the state of South Carolina? If all religions have the same opportunity to request and order specialty plates, then there is no preferential treatment. Fortunately, someone from Americans United did address the question.

"This... Read More plate was created through a different procedure than other special plates. From our press release: 'In legal briefs, AU asserted that the “I Believe” license plate was unlike other specialty tags offered by the state. The measure authorizing the special plates was passed unanimously by both houses of the legislature, with the active support of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. Americans United also pointed out that some legislators openly admitted that they would not vote for similar plates for minority faiths.'"

There's no reason why the legislature should have to go to the trouble of passing a special measure if all religions can request and order specialty plates. Seems, in this case, that they did so to curry political favor from right-wing Christians.

Read THE GOOD BOOK, by David Plotz. A satire about the hilariious, bi-polar, bloodthirsty rantings of those prophets in the Old Testament. Thoughtful perspectives abut how the miracles of the old testament were limited to the imaginations of the writers of that era...Where was the power of Superman and the Fantastic Four back in those days.

I really like the part where he argues that atheists don't ask theists to stop arguing about religion to respect the beliefs of atheists. I'll be sure to use that argument in the future! :)

Speaking against the atrocities of religions, their inconsistencies and dangerous practices, as well as the falsehoods they propagate is not defamation. It is a necessary function of human compassion, logic and advancement.

Religions only prosper as long as nobody questions the tenets. They cannot withstand the cold, logical examination in full daylight and must therefore use threats and protectionism to try and save themselves.

Such resolutions must be struck down for the good of all.

I would agree religion evolves from those things. A more interesting question is 'Do believers do more harm then good towards others with their specific dogmas? I would wonder if they specifically harm more than generally do good?

It seems that religions go through a marked "evolutionary path" for lack of a better term. They all have violent periods that seem to be on predictable cycles. What causes violent oubreaks? Rigidity of thought? Poverty? Both????? Beats me...
