Book launchchild of Tibet - a lost innocenceJuly 1, 2009
Ricki at 6:16pm July 5
When will we abandon politics which seeks to control, rather than empower others? When will our economies be built around need rather than manufactured wants? When will our societies be structured around community and environment? When will "globalisation" be about universal equality and connectedness rather than big business ruling the world? Probably the day before Tibet is free.

Activists like the Drax protesters are the conscience of the nation | George Monbiot | Environment |

Those who put their liberty on the line for what they believe carry the cost of reforms that deliver benefits to almost everyone, writes George Monbiot
Ricki at 3:21pm July 3
Great story. One snippet of particular interest: "When, by contrast, did you last see a climate change denier putting his liberty on the line for his professed belief? As Leo Hickman points out, these people love to see themselves as martyrs. But they risk precisely nothing in promoting their doctrine of selfishness: most of them won't even reveal their true identities."
Paul at 10:59pm July 4
easy to put your personal liberty on the line when you have nothing to lose- even easier to let others do the fighting while sitting at home watching life and the world as we know it slowly erode away on the television.

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown says Australia must do much more itself, and to convince world leaders, to take action to reverse the trend towards ever-increasing wildlife extinctions...
Ricki at 2:00am July 3
Government, farmers, conservationists should be working together to create better outcomes around Australia: quality bush corridors and wildlife refuges. Science could be focussing a lot more on fertility controls for feral cats, dogs, foxes, goats, pigs and Cane Toads, for starters. We must move toward retaining refuges for wildlife which foster a... Read More viable degree of genetic diversity. We must also keep the atmospheric CO2 concentration below 350ppm. More dollars for conservation less for Gunns Ltd.

I know about their abandoned dogs, what pigs would they leave their children behind?
Flydude at 11:02pm July 2
Your can't blame on them either. Look they are hunters. If ice disappear, they have no more lands to work/hunt. and any activities on the ice will become dangerous. If they can't hunt, they can't afford to keep those dogs either.(not one or two,but at least 6~8 dogs for one sleigh....)
Greenland people are suffed by poisonous seal meat too. The toxic waste brought by water current, wind and rain, and stay in the ice and sea of poles forever. I can understand why they have to leave.

The call by scientist Tim Flannery for the Australian Greens to support the Rudd government's 4% emissions trading scheme legislation and ‘get it through' lacked maths and logic, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today...
Ricki at 11:15pm June 30
I greatly respect Flannery but was surprised to hear his comment last night. I don't think getting the nation to carry the weight for the biggest polluters is "better than nothing" or even "a start". Rudd must get his head out of the coal and place an across the board tax on carbon.

KERRY O'BRIEN, PRESENTER: The plan by timber giant Gunns to build a massive pulp mill in Tasmania's north is the biggest private investment in the Apple Isle's history and has captured attention across the country, particularly during the last election.

@Jon - yes, this is disgusting. It's one thing to have these fools impose an unwanted industrial nightmare on the region designed to eat up more forests, but another to make us pay for it. I bet the majority of Australians would not wish to do so.

i look forward to the pulp mill finally being BUILT. In this economy jobs are more important then tree's And remember, these trees are a natural resource
