Shalom House Thank you to Shawna Matthews for your courage, and to Judge Anita Brody, for your courage and your justice outside the box.

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER In 2006, Shawna Matthews was a single, unemployed mother living in public housing when a man she knew only by a nickname offered her $700 to buy a gun for him.
Shalom House

Shalom House is taking a day of prayer and fasting. Centering on God's hand in our collective lives, awaiting the next peacemakers among us.

Shalom House why does the defecit matter when we're talking about health care but not when we're talking about missiles?

There is an interesting cultural and generational debate. I found this response by a young Anabaptist working for peace to be very interesting. He responds to an article by a former hippie-type Mennonite who mocks “peacenjustice” as if it was a failed political movement.

Shalom House Parallel Journeys Worlds Apart
- Mimi Copp

I am 29 years old.

I am 15 years old.

I am a U.S. citizen.

I am a Mexican citizen.

I came to Douglas, Arizona by plane.

I came to Douglas, Arizona by foot.

I came to learn why people are dying in the deserts of Arizona.

I passed through on my way to find a job.

I packed sunscreen, ...a hat, a camera, the Bible, a journal, a sleeping bad, band-aids, a rain jacket.

I packed some food, clothes and water.

I chose to come and spend a week of vacation.

I was chosen by my family as the one to make the trek in order to get work.

I was afraid they’d arrest me if I helped an “illegal” migrant.

I was afraid I’d get lost in the desert and die.

I couldn’t be afraid; people are dying.

I couldn’t be afraid; my family is hungry.

My heart is breaking.

My heart is breaking.

I “legally” crossed the border at the Port of Entry in a few minutes.

I “illegally” crossed the border through a barbed wire fence in the middle of the desert.

They look at me and think I’m “legal.” No need to look at my passport.

They look at me and think I’m “illegal.” No need to look at my passport.

I move about freely.

I must hide.

I sprained by ankle during a walk through the desert and couldn’t walk. I rode home in the car.

I must watch every step. If I get injured I might not get out of the desert.

I’m ready to go home and I will.

I’m ready to go home but can’t.

I’m a child of God.

I’m a child of God.

This year, I've had my first conversations with people who have made this trek. As Emily said on the Shalom House blog, I can't wrap my mind around the extreme measures people take to come to the U.S.

Even now, as the sacharine sounds of Christmas songs pipe in from the iPod playing behind me, I struggle to bear in mind that pregnant woman who forced herself through a drain-pipe in her efforts to raise her child in a better place, and pray they both made it safely.

How do we read the biblical narratives of the birth of Jesus that help us get beyond the innocent, feel-good, Hallmark-card imagery, and help us see the powerful liberating message of these texts? How do we “undomesticated” the Christmas stories in Matthew and Luke so we can see how they speak to our contemporary global crises and call us to radical discipleship?

The cost of war in in dollars alone requires a choice not only to stop sending troops but also to withdraw all U.S. military forces and invest in civilian-led development of Afghanistan's devastated communities.
