There are lots of things you can do to help. Here are just a few ideas to get started:

Hold a bake sale. Bake sales are a fun and easy way to get the whole family involved in doing good for your community. And if you can get your kids to fully participate in helping other kids with hunger, it can really help to boost sales at your bake sale. See http://greatamericanbakesale.org for details.

Hold a food drive. Gather food from around your community to donate to your local food bank. See http://strength.org/get_involved/food_drive/ for more info.... See More

Volunteer. There are many events we hold that you can volunteer with depending on your area. If you like to cook, you can volunteer with Operation Frontline; if you like to eat instead, you may want to volunteer for a Taste of the Nation event. Or you can even volunteer at your local food bank; they always need food sorters! See http://strength.org/get_involved/ for more.

Hope this helps! (c:

We agree. But as an organization, we have to motivate and organize many different groups, including teachers. Our Hunger in America's Classrooms project is aimed at getting info from teachers on what is going on with kids because the methods of recording hunger within people's homes is a very delicate situation.

Currently, the USDA uses a questionnaire that asks about availability of food in the home to get info on hunger, but the methodology is not exactly equatable with hunger. That's why the more rigorous sources we can use to get info on hunger statistics, the better.

After all, unlike most nonprofits who have vague goals, we are publicly committed to ending childhood hunger by 2015. But a large part of fulfilling this promise requires statistical data points that we can point to as decreasing over time.... See More

Don't worry; we aren't ignoring parents. Soon, you will see more initiatives from us aimed directly at parents in America.

I am not surprised that our nation's teachers do whatever they can to help the kids in their care; I am shocked, however, that 63% of them are faced with buying food for our children. As a mother and a concerned citizen, I am thankful that Share Our Strength relentlessly fights to eradicate childhood hunger in our country.

I have helped organize a program called Snack Buddies to benefit a low income school in Green Bay, WI. We use donations to buy healthy snacks so we are able to provide a snack every school day, for every student. By the end of the school year, we will have provided over 63,000 snacks. We have helped take the burden off teachers who were buying food for their students to eat in the classroom, plus we are showing the children that other people in the community care about them and their well being!
