PHILADELPHIA – Siena’s final possession of a 73-69 loss to Temple on Saturday was pretty typical of the final five minutes of the game, which included some terrific play but also some glaring miscues. Here was the situation: With 3.4 seconds left, Siena was trailing by three points. The Saints were inbounding the ball ...from underneath their own basket and therefore needed to get the ball about three-quarters of the way down...Read More

PHILADELPHIA — The Siena men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 73-69 in a see-saw game against Temple that came down to the final seconds. After Temple’s Juan Fernandez missed the front end of a one-and-one that would have all but ended the game, Siena trailed by three points wit...h 3.6 seconds to play. The Saints executed a perfect three-quarter-court pass to Alex Franklin near the top of...Read More

gave it away...if they don't start hitting some free throws they're never gonna win the close ones, and good teams win the close games.

PHILADELPHIA — Siena point guard Ronald Moore was one second away from SportsCenter and YouTube fame. Moore, making like a quarterback, threw the ball almost the full the length of the court and into the hoop — but one second after the halftime buzzer Saturday at the Liacouras Center. The Saints still lead Temple, 36-30, at the intermission. Clarence Jackson leads Siena with 15 points, and Alex Franklin has 13.

PHILADELPHIA — Hello from Philly, which is going to be my home away from home for the next week. The Saints — and I — are here today for a game against Temple, then back Thanksgiving weekend for games against Saint John’s and Brown. I’ll check out of my hotel Sunday morning and check back in Friday morning....

LOUDONVILLE – Siena coach Fran McCaffery said that he’s going to try to extend his bench, which played only sparingly against Northeastern. In this past Tuesday’s 59-53 win, McCaffery went only eight deep. He brought in sophomores Kyle Downey and Owen Wignot as well as freshman O.D. Anosike. McCaffery said he’d like to go nine players deep at some point soon, preferably before guard Kyle Griffin (Dec....

LOUDONVILLE — Siena women’s basketball coach Gina Castelli remained one win short of 300 Friday after her team lost, 77-55, to Eastern Michigan at Alumni Recreation Center. The Saints (0-2) trailed by as many as 34 points in the second half. They couldn’t overcome a 32-point effort from Eastern Michigan’s Tavelyn James..., who shot 11-for-15 from the field and hit 8-of-12 from 3-point range. Siena next plays Tuesday at Wagner.Read More

Siena’s “Graduation Success Rate,” or GSR, of 95 percent ranked fifth highest in the country, according to the latest NCAA report released earlier this week.  Siena’s graduation rate among athletes was 84 percent, which was 5 percent higher than the school’s student body. The Graduation Success Rate, or GSR, differs fr...om the graduation rate in that it accounts for students who leave or transfer, thereby capturing a larger group of students. For all the sloppiness on the offensive end in Siena’s 59-53 win over Northeastern on Tuesday, that win will look better over time. Good teams win games against good teams even when they don’t play well. McGuire’s column here.

Temple, Siena’s opponent this coming Saturday, almost pulled off a big upset Tuesday before falling to No. 19  Georgetown, 46-45, on the road. The game, also part of ESPN’s 24-hour basketball marathon, looked a lot like the Saints’ 59-53 win over Northeastern. Temple, of the Atlantic 10, and Georgetown, of the Big East..., shot just 32 and 36 percent, respectively. The Owls may have won the game if not for a 6-for-13 performance...Read More

ALBANY – Kenny Hasbrouck, in town while rehabbing a foot injury, sat on the Siena bench Tuesday during a 59-53 win over Northeastern at Times Union Center.  And apparently, the former Saints shooting guard did more than just enjoy the view. Former Siena men’s basketball player Cory Magee, who was forced to end his career because of a head injury, is serving as a student assistant coach this season. ALBANY – Siena coach Fran McCaffery said he was most pleased to see his team win, 59-53, over Northeastern, on an afternoon when offense didn’t come easily. Instead, the Saints won a grinding, defensive struggle Tuesday that wasn’t always pretty. “It’s very satisfying,” McCaffery said. “I think everybody here could tell it was a game we easily could have lost....

ALBANY — Northeastern took a 26-20 lead over Siena into halftime Tuesday afternoon at Times Union Center. The Saints used a 12-0 run to erase much of what was an early 12-point deficit. ALBANY — Good afternoon from Times Union Center, where Siena and Northeastern are playing what might as well be called the “Lunch Break Classic.” Hey, I suppose it’s better than the 6 a.m. start time that faced Saint Peter’s or the 8 a.m. tip for Niagara. Gina Castelli watched Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim record his 800th win with a certain appreciation. Like Boeheim, who has spent his entire career with the Orange, Castelli has recorded all 299 of her wins in 20 years at Siena. She’ll be trying for 300 on Sunday when the Saints open the season on the road against Illinois, a Big Ten school. “I just think with (Boeheim), he is a real loyal person,”...
