Social Media NZ Looking Into 2010: Things Will Get Louder
2010 is here, and there is much discussion over how the face of social media will change in the year ahead. Hot topics include the prominence of niche communities, increased attention to social media ROI, and the mobile becoming more and more of a life line. The way we ...interact with the internet has certainly changed significantly within the space of 12 months. I have always used the internet to connect with new people, but only in the past 1 - 2 years have a significant chunk of those people really been from New Zealand. In some ways, the internet has become far more relevant to me. My Google Reader is brimming with subscriptions catering to every niche I am interested in. Not only that, but I hear from far more Kiwi's on Twitter, and visit far more Kiwi news websites than I have in the past. More and more of my friends and acquaintances have joined Facebook and Twitter. I follow a bunch of businesses, and friend/fan them on Facebook. With my mobile Wi-Fi enabled I can connect 24/7. That is incredible connectivity. It is also an incredible amount of noise. Too many friends, too many updates, too many stories and too much easily accessible information. Sometimes keeping up is a lot of work. 2010 needs to be a year of figuring out how to filter the fluff, it should be about selection and relevance. The rate the online world is expanding into the offline world, it is becoming difficult to keep up with it all. A serious pruning must be in order. I have read a comment comparing what we are facing today, to what we faced in the early days of email. It's not a bad analogy, and it is worth investing some time figuring out where your energy is best invested online. Social media is this amazing vehicle of authenticity, but it's power is compromised when relevant dialog is drowned out by all this noise. Our attention spans are constantly compromised as we wonder where the next big thing is coming from rather than use what is right in front of us. The key to harnessing the added value of social media is having a good look at what you are trying to achieve, and throwing away the excess to reflect that. That, and I'd like to feel that I can spend the day unconnected and not have all everything build up to an unmanageable level! How do your noise levels check out? P.S. Happy new year! Social Media NZ What are 2010 expectations in Social Media ?
Looking back at 2009 the biggest trend by far was the huge increase in the use of Twitter. Some people "get it" and most don`t but it has definetely skyrocketed and those using it well are getting huge benefit. The biggest news for me by far was the advent of social... search. It has entrenched Facebook and Twitter as money making enterprises as Google and Microsoft are now paying them millions for their content. What it means basically that if we are say deciding on whether to go to a Rolling Stones concert in Christchurch after they played in Auckland 2 days before we will no longer do a search for a review. We will search live or very recent conversations from people who were there. This will create a huge change in marketing in 2010. Companies, events, celebrities, brands will need to monitor these conversations and join in them to promote themselves or answer any negative publicity.Up till now they have pretty much had control and not needed to worry about social media. This I believe is Web 3.0. A whole new paradigm. Conversation marketing with carefully scripted and keyworded conversations by teams will become crucial. This is an exciting development 2010 will also be a year in which social media goes mainstream. Even two of my old school mates have joined Facebook in the past month! They are the first ones.2 months or so ago the CEO of Google Eric Scmidt came out and said that in 5 years time 90% of the internet will be social media. New Zealand is a year or so behind the US but it is starting to wake up to the power of having conversations that are not just 1 to 1.People will start to realise. Hey, if I tweet this or make it my Facebook update instead of texting it everyone will see it and start to be more conscious of developing their personal brand via twitter. They will realise that they have to give value about their niche to be seen as an expert. The whole level of social media interaction will increase and improve. I truly believe we have seen nothing yet. I think 2010 will also be a year where Twitter seeks more monetization.Twitter in Japan already has ads and is introducing a system where people can charge you to read their tweets. Some kind of monetizing will happen in the rest of the world too. What do you think will happen? Will this put you off Twitter? Michael Q Todd @mqtodd

Social Media NZ A Look Back at 2009 and 2010 predictions by John Lai
As 2009 comes to a close, there are three main things to look back on, My Life, Social Media and Technology. 23rd August 2009, was the exact date Social Media NZ was started, it all started from a simple frustration of, there isn't a main hub for New Zealanders, spe...cifically for Social media and Tech News. Another Reason for Social Media NZ, is Passion, why did I say Passion ? It's because Not only My passion for Social Media and Technology are strong, but the one that matters is the Passion of Giving Back, as I see the likes of Mashable, Read Write Web give back in terms of Latest News, Latest events and, etc that impacts their Community. With Social Media NZ I want to impact New Zealand in moving forward in Social Media and Technology. By reporting on the latest Social Media and Tech News, has helped me gained some very valuable knowledge from Social Media and Tech Geniuses like Pete Cashmore of Mashable, Michael Arrington of Techcrunch, Chris Prillio of Lockergnome, Biz S tone and Evan Williams from Twitter and many, many, more. The opportunity has really allowed me to Give Back in terms of knowledge and the information, I have gained to the readers, to ensure, we are here in NZ are in the same race as the major countries who embraced and understand Social Media and Technology. 2010 in New Zealand, there will be a significant increase in not only personal usage of social media sites, but companies will start dipping their toes in it. Because Businesses like Giapo , T he Wine Vault , The Falls , Langham Auckland , Air New Zealand , Vodafone NZ , Telecom NZ and Many others have really embraced Social media and Technology into part of their Companies. And also expect Social media policy to be introduced. As this year's theme in Social Media and Technology, Is Real-Time Updates and Searches, with the likes of Twitter leading the race, follow by Facebook, and also Google's hand in Real Time Conversation/Updates and Searches such as Google Wave, and Google Real Time Search. Three Major features that will shape 2010 will be Location Services , Augmented Reality and Social Gaming. With Location Services like Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp will play a huge part in Social Media, why am I confident enough to say that ? Recently, with Twitter acquiring Location based Service Company Mixer Labs , which means Twitter Knows Real Time Location Pinpointing is the way to go and also companies in the States and some in the UK have taken location based services like Foursquare and Gowalla as a free tool to advertise their business, mostly from I see are Bars and Restaurants. Augmented reality basically is Enabled by GPS, mapping data from the likes of Google and the accelerometer technology in modern phones e.g. iPhone, Augemeented reality involves overlaying data on your environment; Just imagine this you are walking around a city and seeing it come to life with reviews of the restaurants you walk past and Wikipedia entries about the sights you see. Layar, Bionic Eyes and Car Finder are just some of the Augmented reality apps for the iPhone that are Causing these Buzz. - which means the real world we live in will be much cooler :) And Lastly Social Gaming, especially on Facebook, This year we saw Zynga's FarmVille game on Facebook now counts more active users than Twitter, claims a Facebook executive. However, will virtual currencies these games have spawned: In the "allegedly" unmonetizable world of social media, virtual buying and selling may be the route to riches for some social media sites, what do you think ? Summarizing it up, 2010: Expect more companies utilizing Location services like Foursquare and Gowalla, Augmented Reality - making the world much cooler and more interactive , More Social Gaming to be introduced and Social Media Policies for Companies Would love to hear your thoughts, if you agree or disagree to what is expected in 2010 ? Social Media NZ A Look Back at 2009 and 2010 predictions by Nicole Ferreira
As we prepare for not only a new year, but also a new decade, I have spent a lot of time reflecting back on the past 10 years and how far I have come. Much like most people, 2009 was a big year for me in terms of Social Media. I was one of the later adopters to the ...Twitter phenomenon; joining in March of 2009. Before joining Twitter, Social Media wasn't a term that I thought much about. I had been on Facebook for many years, as well as other sites, but they were more aimed towards reconnecting with old friends rather than towards building new relationships and new communities in the world of Social Media. In fact, even though I have had a Linkedin profile for quite some time, it was only recently that I discovered what you can truly do with Linkedin. This is something that I plan on focusing a little bit more on in 2010. As an accountant, my experiences with Social Media has been more of personal branding and personal collaboration, rather than for business. For me, personally, Social Media got me back into writing, and it introduced me to people and worlds that I may never have known had I not embraced it. I have learned so much this past year, and am quite excited to see what more I will learn in the years to come. With Twitter , Linkedin , Facebook , Foursquare , Gowalla , and all of the other Social Media products that became more involved in everyone's lives in 2009, my thoughts are that we are going to see a 2010 that will place a stronger emphasis on building those relationships in Social Media. People are already collaborating more through social networks, and 2010 will show more acceptance of social media in more situations. One of the things that I noticed this past year was more and more companies blocking their employees from using social media platforms during work hours. These instances were setup because of a lessening of productivity in the workforce. In some cases, I can agree, but I do see more companies changing their minds and embracing social media more. 2009 was more of a learning year, whereas 2010 will be more of a production year. In 2009, the online collaborations and networking through social media were taken one step further with more people taking their online networks into the real world. Online networks have been around for many years, and for many years, some of these online networks were with people who may never meet in real life. The twitter community, known for coining their own terms (tweets, tweeps, twitterverse, and the like), began having more meetups (or tweetups) in 2009. There is something to say about creating a stronger relationship with a person when you have actually met them in person. I firmly believe that we will see more of these meetups in 2010 and beyond. As you all, our amazing readers, surely have noticed, my posts have mainly focused on reviewing iPhone apps that relate to Social Media and other technological advances. I will be continuing these reviews through 2010; in fact, I have a list of about 10 apps that I have already started to review, and am quite intrigued about each and every one of them (an early thank you to those of you who have provided apps for me to check out, you all rock! Keep those suggestions coming). iPhones, Blackberries, and Android phones have made a huge impact on the advancements of Social Media. They have assisted Social Media's popularity by allowing it to be portable. No longer are we restricted to engaging online only when we are near a computer with an internet connection. With more and more people purchasing these phones, more and more augmented reality applica tions have entered the market. We, at Social Media NZ, have presented you with only a small percentage of these applications (Yelp, Foursquare, Gowalla, Flook, to name a few), and there are so many more out there to be discovered. I am quite excited for this coming year, and I hope that you are too! Social Media has been an exciting journey so far, and there is so much more to come. Social Media NZ [Update] Google Nexus One Pricing and Plans
Yesterday the team at Boy Genius Report and Gizmodo have found out what the pricing and plans are for the Google Nexus One. Gathering from these sources, Here is what stood out: There is a $530.00 unsubsidized phone - Google decided not to sell this at cost. If my... Math is Correct $530 convert over to New Zealand Dollars that will be around $733 NZD If $530 USD/$733 NZD, seems a bit to much - there will be a subsidized phone, which means you would have to sign up to a 24 month contract and pay $180 for the phone The $530.00 unsubsidized phone will work with any other plan on T-Mobile Network There will be only one plan on this Phone and that is - A $79.99 plan that gives you text, phone, and web. Unsure how many text, phone minutes and data for your web surfacing you will be given with this plan As you can see the price is way more affordable then the iPhone, especially buying it unsubsidized. The Phone is tip to be sold at http://www.google.com/phone . (Picture is property of Gizmodo.com ) Vodafone NZ and Telecom NZ is keeping a real tight lip on the google nexus one phone development, but it would be interesting to see which company jump on this opportunity, but what I have learned is that the google phone's GSM is 900/2100, which is a match with Vodafone's frequencies. So as of Right now, like the iApple Slate device, it is just another mystical device, untill Google confirms it. All the updates will be confirmed at Google’s January 5th press conference. Social Media NZ A look back at 2009 – what I’ve seen with Social Media and what I see happening in 2010.
I kicked off in earnest using social media at the start of the year, I say in earnest as last year (2008) I used only LinkedIn. This year I have used Twitter and LinkedIn to not only grow Adage Business, but also to assist clients with reaching and communicating with ...their market; and in the main this has been extremely successful. The year kicked off with me using Twitter to get a feel for what possibilities it had for me and my business, I already knew what I could expect from LinkedIn having gained an international contract as a media agent for an international newspaper; but Twitter was a whole new ball game. Over the course of the year I’ve noticed people have steered away from using social media to ‘blast’ their sales messages to becoming more conversational and in teractive with their market. There’s still room for improvement here though, perhaps with some of the new tools being talked about we will see more conversation taking place. I do have doubts though. My take on Social Media in NZ is that people – business – are still very much using it to promote, and in doing so are missing out on connecting and communicating with their market. There’s been some good examples from a number of companies on how to use Social Media, particularly from the likes of AirNZ, Vodafone, The Wine Vault and Giapo and others; but many others are still missing the boat. The use of social media in NZ can only grow, and in growing we will see businesses who have been using various social media platforms successfully pulling others along, steering them in the right direction – this will be more a lead by example rather than by specific training or learning methods. Already we have seen a proliferation of people coming forward as Social Media experts or gurus, however there is a risk in this in that some of these are people who have only touched on the area of Social Media but who are not actively using it in a manner that is successful. New tools will come on the market, already I’ve heard of a new social media tool in development that will be aimed at SMEs – however I feel that due to the manner in which the company who is behind its development are currently using Social Media some who take up this new tool may be left in the cold and not gain the full benefits of using social media. The new real time Google search will continue to be developed and others will soon come to the party with other tools to help business’ track their online activities, and in doing so we will see a more methodical way for business’ to track and monitor ROI. More mobile apps will become available not only for ease of communicating, tracking and monitoring, but apps will become available which will allow consumers to better communicate with business – telling business how the feel, these apps will be similar to people meters currently used by market research companies. Whatelse comes through in 2010 in the way of tools, methods and manner in which business’ use social media will come about by demand from users – it will be the likes of you and me who will help drive social media and help in the development of tools to make this easier; we all need to keep our fingers on the pulse and keep and open mind. 2010 and beyond will be exciting – are you ready for the ride? Graeme @ Adage business
