Kate Frey spoke at our general meeting in November and invited the Master Gardeners to participate in this program of 6 Saturday classes beginning in January 2010. You may attend one class or the entire series.

Sonoma County Master Gardeners Winter is a great time to prune many of your evergreen trees and shrubs. Participants will learn how to prune evergreens properly and take those evergreens and make them into a beautiful wreath or swags to take home. Cost is $40.00 per person and includes all class supplies for a large wreath, refreshments and handou...ts. Bring your friends, your garden snips and start your own holiday tradition. Please dress appropriately for the weather; the workshops is held outdoors.

These Master Gardeners have completed extensive training in the biology of Phytophthora ramorum (the pathogen that causes SOD), disease spread, hazards, and preventative treatment options available to homeowners. The workshop will include d...iscussion of the disease, clarification about the oaks that are and are not susceptible, the status of the spread of the disease in Sonoma County and the US, treatment options and what to do with a tree that has been killed by SOD. Brian Healey will answer these questions and many more at a workshop this coming Saturday, October 24, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. He will provide a month-by-month calendar on when and how to select the rig...ht variety of trees, prepare the soil and plant bare root. He will also explain the best ways for chilling, pruning and thinning these valuable assets.

Heidi Stewart will demonstrate how to produce easy nutrient-rich compost from worm castings. She will show how to set up a worm box to provide a productive environment for the crawlers and explain what to feed them and what not to feed them.
