According the this Courier-Life article http://www.yournabe.com/articles/2009/12/18/brooklyn_heights_courier/news/brooklyn_heights_courier_newsjspidct12182009.txt, the City and State used to pay 100% of the cost of student bus and subway passes. In 1995, there was an agreement among the State, the City, and the MTA to split the costs evenly, which... See More was $15 million each that year. The State now pays just $6 million. The MTA pays $31 million. The article does not say what the City kicks in. This kind of dumping of expenses on the MTA burdens every rider. The City and the State must pay the costs of pupil transportation, not the parents and not the rest of the MTA's riders.

Better still would be to tell the state to make the MTA answer to the taxpayers.

The Legislature and the City Council need to have real and stable funding for public transportation. The real estate transfer tax has collapsed and should never have been the source of transit funds. The legislature plugged the gaps last year with gimmicks that did not produce enough revenue. NYC has one of the lowest transit subsidies in the US... See More while being the most transit-dependent city. It is a disgrace, and the MTA's financial crises will recur until the people tell their representatives to fund transit.

Something has to be done. They keep raising out fares and cutting service. I can't even find parking at the train stations. On Long Island they raise our property taxes and cut services

Fed-up with the MTA and its “doomsday” cuts passed Wednesday, New York officials had their own suggestions — and some angry words — for the troubled agency and its $400 million budget gap.

More needs to be cut...we need to actually get to $343M instead of balancing the budget through games.

It's true that the financial mess is not of the MTA's making... coming from the above statement..... how is this true.... with overpaying by union workers such as conductors who make way more than ny cops and teachers and hundreds of lawyers on call but having to contract out.... they have created their own cluster fuck and expect the public to ... See Morebail them out when no members of the mta work force is willing to take a single penny pay cut to save their jobs... please tell me how the mta has nothing to do with this mess....

union workers are getting 11% raises this year, at a time in which others (that is, those who still HAVE a job) are at best hoping for 1-2% increase. Heinous.

NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign News reports this morning say the MTA is seriously considering reviving some $113 million in sweeping cuts to subway and bus service. This would be a disaster for subway and bus riders and for the MTA.

For subway and bus riders, these cuts would mean longer waits, more crowding and the death of three subway lines and ma...ny bus routes.

For the MTA, reviving these cuts would shred their credibility. The riding public was told last May that there would be no service cuts when the legislature bailed out the MTA. Riders held up their part of the bargain with a fare hike last June, yet now they are threatened with getting substantially less while paying more. Riders have every right to be mad as hell.

Among the cuts being seriously considered for revival are:

• partially or completely killing the M, W and Z lines;

• increasing waiting times and crowding at midday on a dozen subway lines;

• increasing night subway service from every 20 minutes to 30 minutes;

• shutting four subway stations in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn late nights;

• eliminating overnight service on 25 bus routes;

• ending weekend service on 41 bus routes; and

• cutting all weekday service on 21 bus routes.

We have a chance to show the MTA that riders are mad as hell this Wednesday. We need to pack the MTA board room with riders to let them know how we feel.
