Graham Relf

Graham Relf Well, it seems as if I have egg on my face. In my previous scribe I bemoaned the fact that technicians very rarely receive Honorary Oscar recognition. Ha! Ha! Evidently, the cinematographer Gordon Willis will in fact join the prestigous list. Also, Lauren Bacall. Wonderful! As Billy Wilder once said '' Who else? And what took you so long? "

I would personally have preferred it if a couple of younger presenters were chosen such as Hilary Swank or Scarlett Johansson. With the greatest respect to Steve Martin, I feel the problem with appointing comics/comedians/comedic actors is that they have a tendancy to take over the show. I also am not impressed by exte...nding the "Best Picture" nominations from five to ten. I think this is a mistake that will inevitably compromise the integrity of the Academy. It will result in a wash of not very good pictures being nominated. I'm not anti "populist" but if the Oscars are to continue to be the benchmark for excellence then this is a retrograde step.Read More

That's terrible! my fav night of the year hosted by the only actor who is not worthy of this name: Steve Martin! Hope Alec Baldwin (a real movies' lover ), who hosted on TCM, with Robert Osborne) will save the show!

Murielle, I have to say I agree with you that the only hope is that Alec Baldwin will bring a dash of REAL wit to proceedings. Sorry, Steve, but you hosted before and it really wasn't very good. This co-hosting concept isn't new and I remember back in, I think, 1968 Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis et al did it and it was OK but it ... Read Moregenerally doesn't work. It becomes a little messy and self-conscious. I suppose I would say this as a Brit but our own Stephen Fry did the Baftas in the UK for a number of years and he was just superb. Not only witty but erudite and knowledgable.

So, Murielle, who would be your ideal choice?

Are you a college student who aspires to become an entertainment journalist? If so, here’s your chance! The Academy® and mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, are holding the second annual “Oscar® Correspondent Contest,” giving college journalists nationwide the chance to head to Los Angeles to cover red carpet festivit...ies and backstage celebrations at the 82nd Academy Awards.

Video entries may be submitted to mtvU.com between October 26 and December 18 and should be no more than two minutes in length.

The Academy and mtvU will select ten contest entries that will be posted online at mtvU.com between January 20 and February 10 for public voting. The three teams whose videos receive the most votes will be flown to Los Angeles to cover Academy Awards pre-events including:

* Animated Feature Symposium
* Foreign Language Film Award Nominees Photo Op
* Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Symposium
* Governors Ball preview

After a final round of voting, the Grand Prize team will be revealed at an Academy press conference on Saturday, March 6.
