N.B. This is not an event to ignore, to cast aside with the rest.
If you're unfamiliar with the work of Derevo, you only need to watch one of their videos for a few moments to realise that something different is going on. Strange, contorted men with bald heads and raw limbs pull along a huge machine, with ropes thr...ough their gritted teeth. The sound of metal beating on tin rings out above, sounds of shooting and panic. There's someone in pain, somewhere, but you're not sure where it's coming from or even if you're imagining it. A naked, shaved body emerges from a tub raised high on the huge machine before being released into the chaos.
Derevo's speciality is transforming their chosen location into somewhere devoid of space and time. It'll be interesting to see how this translates to The Arches.
Beginning in the basement, groups of 25 are lined against the dusty walls; 25 people witnessing something mesmerising before being plunged into darkness. Then, with light returning, all the bodies throughout the building creep from their crevices to unite for a huge promenade performance. Avant-garde theatre collective Akhe are used to performing in parks and public spaces - in Natura Morte, their energy will be contained within the Arches' cavernous underground tunnels, ready to be explode with a fierce physical energy.
