I work out as long as three hours about twice a week and 1.5 to 2 hours three times per week. As a type 1 diabetic I hve experimented with insulin dosages and exercise. When I know I am going to exercise three hours, I only take about 1/2 of a unit of insulin lispro and eat some carbs for energy. I usually end up with ...blood sugars of 75-85 usually. My theory is when I burn up fatty acids in the later part of exercise I need far less insulin. Had I not exercised and ate no carbs I would have needed about three units of insulin.
