Marco Rummolo
Please, help us to spread this letter.
Open letter to the President of United States, Barack Obama, and to the Heads of Government of all democratic countries.
Dear Mr. Obama, Presidents and Prime Ministers:
Today Italy is going through one of the darkest periods of its recent history and is wrestling with a man who is menacing, in a dangerous manner, the democratic future of the country. This man, while in Your countries would be already in jail or on trial, in our country, in order to avoid such consequences, get his majority to pass ad personam laws contrasting any democratic and legal principles in force in the great democracies You represent (continues at the following link):

Neil Madden Why didn't anyone tell me The Economist wasn't just about economics? Just read it for the first time, and absorbed more real news in the first few pages then I'd normally get in a week reading 3 daily's and about 10 hours on google/news. Were do I subscribe! :)

Neil, You are right. Ever since BW went down hill, The Economist became by favorite. It covered issues that way ahead, sometimes by a year, of several other popular business magazines. It is not cheap. Fortunately I read the copies at work or gym.

These stubborn, slavery system loving, red hot commies have got to be kidding me!

Dipu Mahamud now present inflation rate in BD is very high.. govt. have to rise salary of govt. employee.how govt. can do this without rising TAX. plz suggest.
Anup at 6:24am July 5
Off the top of my head I would say use a 'redistrubution of income from rich to poor' approach. This can be done in 2 ways:
1)REGRESSIVE increase in inflation adjustment payments to public sector employees. (with the lowest income-earners almost fully compensated and the highest earners almost not compensated at all):
While it would be required to fully compensate for the inflationary loss of income for lower income public sector employees in order for them to achieve a minimum standard of living..it wouldn't be as necessary to compensate those of higher income.
2)Increased income tax on higher income brackets(INCREASINGLY PROGRESSIVE TAX):... Read More
To finance the public sector payouts..I think taxes would be inevitable..However the government could increase the degree to which the taxes are progressive. Ie. Levy higher taxes to the high income brackets.

I feel the private sector backlash caused by the increased taxes on high earners (decreased investment and business activity) wouldn't be a grave issue in BD's present relatively robust growth period.
However, the gov't could nevertheless further strengthen pro-business policies to sustain growth.
(Inflation would still remain a problem throughout all this..but it seems to be exhibiting a downward pattern these days)

Justin I was catching up on some YouTube the other day and learned about the costs incurred to end-consumers if a nation-wide cap-and-trade system is applied. The rationale behind this is job creation, at the expense of taxing consumers. Do the pros outweigh the cons? Much appreciated.

I recently read an article in TE concerning the legalisation of drugs. I would like to ask any economists here: do you think legalisation would increase demand and/or consumption of drugs? Here is the article in question:

Lunga Sive Gxumisa This newspaper is easily my favourite weekly read, however I don't quite understand why there was story about Captain America in last week's issue. It just seemed terribly out of context with the rest of the articles in The Economist
Kevin at 5:59am July 1
I think I know where you're coming from on that, but I disagree. The small section in the back (science, arts, the always interesting obituary) is a welcomed snippet of information about the world outside of politics. Also, Captain America symbolizes what most American comic book heroes of the 20th century symbolized: the righteousness of the ... Read Morefree world during the cold war. If you look at a lot of comic books from the cold war era (you know, the good ones), they have heavy messages influencing the population.
Don't write me off as a conspiracy theorist; most of the villains were either Russian or Eastern European. e.g. Red Skull, Omega Red, Dr. Doom, Kraven. Point being I thought this side article was a wonderful addition.
My favorite weekly read as well.

I liked it - the pop culture of any given place can tell you quite a bit.

Aadlina Malal Can any one tell me what is the natural rate of interest?

Jennifer Galgoci Taylor I love it when the economists try to take down Obama. They get really riled-up about it-and for good reason. The gov't is completely over-reaching in every aspect. The problem with Socialism, is that it eliminates any and all competition and advancement. Our (current) superior healthcare system breeds advancement and technology that isn't available to government institutions.
Mohsin at 4:31am July 1
But Jenny the socialism does not talk about to remove all the development, advancement but it talkes about the fair share to all, especially to bring up the downtrodden not to bring down the advancing classes.
John at 11:50am July 1
You can maintain competition while eliminating the perverse incentives that reward the sheer amount of care provided instead of its results. Note the Kaiser and Mayo Clinic examples cited in the current issue. I agree that competition is vastly superior to government-run care - but its also out of control cost-wise and will only get worse so.

Bernardo Carvalho Dear Economist - where's the Kindle version? Pretty please with sugar on top?

Feyzi Pelit What is your take on the Natrual Gas' future??? Why is US not taking a long hard look at this cheap and abundant source of energy and fixate ourselves on things like solar power and wind energy which are years away from being profitable and accepted??
