At AES in NYC I learned that the US DOJ had granted University of Colorado - Denver a million dollars to establish a Master's program in "forensic media." The theory behind this is that all media is digital and that we need to cross-collaborate. Of course, DOJ wants expert witnesses for trials, but their point and outlook that all media are essentially digital at this point is well taken.

We're in a transitional phase. MP3s are of inferior audio quality, the web isn't fast enough to download even the antiquated 16 bit 44.1 k CD standard, and we're clearly moving toward 24 bit 96k mixes as the new standard. So why buy inferior MP3s or CDs? People have been burned buying and re-buying music in format after format - so I would surmise a lot of people - like me - buy nothing until we have a good sounding format. The quality of the music itself is a whole separate issue.
