Read Moreenvironment as it is now. And it's fair to say most of our fellow citizens do not care, for all sorts of reasons. Also, there's more to this than just techno-fix solutions. Automobile dependent suburban sprawl "growth" must stop. In fact the whole "growth" mantra must stop. But that is not likely.
There are individuals and groups doing good work on these issues, but my fear is that it's too little too late...

Isn't the main problem that people are badly educated, badly informed and unable to recognize when they are being manipulated? Most people are confused and very frightened.(But frightened of the wrong things.) If they really understood what was going on, I think it's possible that some might abandon their SUV's and be willing to work toward improving humanity's situation.

Robert: Point taken, but look at the coverage of the respective magazines -- or rather, how each covers similar stories. Because I've had free subscriptions to both for the last 12 months, I've been comparing them closely. NEWSWEEK employs more conservative columnists than TIME, and their number is increasing. TIME is definitely the less conservative or the two now, despite Halperin.

if you thought an enemy of health care reform was a rich insurance company exec, you'd be only half right. the other half is the person i see in the mirror when i realize i haven't talked to every single person i can think of about how the U.S. Govt is better at this than the rich insurance company exec -- just ask my parents, they love their medicare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about supporting primary rivals and third party candidates who actually stand for progressive values? Withholding contributions from the DLC and Blue Dogs until the GOP nominates someone worse -- and then caving -- is not going to bring change.

I changed my registration from Democrat to NONpartisan, and will not vote for an incumbant, and will vote for someone who can't possibly win and screw up anything in D.C. OR if I find a TRUE PROGRESSIVE, then I will vote for her/him.

I go back to what Gloria Steinem famously said way back when: "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament."

Let's ignore her and hope she goes away.
