Theater Schmeater
An Oak Tree
by Tim Crouch
Tim Crouch, a British writer/performer, received an Obie Special Citation award when An Oak Tree played off-Broadway. Crouch questions the very nature of theater and performance in a fully scripted play for 2 actors, one of whom has never seen the play or read the script. Theater Schmeater Artis...tic Director David Gassner plays Crouch's original role of a stage hypnotist who has lost his mojo. He teams with a new actor every night.

Theater Schmeater
Theater Schmeater is excited to announce the opening of Arthur Miller’s enigmatic satire The Creation of the World and Other Business on Friday September 11 at 8:00 p.m. The production will then run on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through October 10th. Originally intended as Theater Schmeater’s entry in a city w...ide Arthur Miller Festival that never occurred, The Creation of the World and Other Business proved to be so compelling that we decided to do it anyway.
More than two decades after he stormed on the American stage, Miller made his first attempt at writing a comedy, choosing the first books of Genesis as his inspiration. Retaining his practice of exposing universal conflict within the context of family, Miller presents us with Adam, Eve, and their darling sons Cain and Abel. God is the doting but stern paterfamilias and Lucifer a meddlesome uncle who crashes the weekend barbecues. Along with various angels, Miller uses the ultimate nuclear family to trace the fall from innocence to full-blooded humanity. Witty and urbane, Miller presents us with a first family whose flaws, ultimately, are our own.
Theater Schmeater has assembled a formidable cast for The Creation of the World and Other Business, including James Weidman as God, Alexander Samuels as Lucifer, Heather Roberts as Eve, and Matthew Middleton as Adam. Anthony Duckett plays Cain, and Natural Israel plays Abel. The archangels Azrael, Chemuel and Raphael are played by Deniece Bleha, Amelia Meckler, and Lisa Branham, respectively.
The set design is by Steve Cooper, with lighting design by Regan MacStravic, and sound design by Larry Ryan. Julia Evanovich is the costume designer, with property design by Cole Hornaday. The stage manager is Julia Griffin, assisted by Miranda Pratt. The Creation of the World and Other Business is directed by J.D. Lloyd.
The Creation of the World and Other Business will have a preview on Thursday, September 10th. This is an opportunity for the adventuresome theatergoer to participate in Theater Schmeater’s Theater Adventure Reward Program (TARP – unlike the fed’s program, you don’t have to give it back!). By attending this preview of The Creation of the World and Other Business, each audience member will receive One Dollar! This offer is limited to “first-come, first-served” at the box office (no reservations), and the box office will open at 7:00 p.m. Theater Schmeater offers this program to encourage dedicated theatergoers who thrill at the excitement and occasional danger of being in an audience for a production’s first public performance.
Opening Night is Friday, September 11th, with subsequent offerings on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through October 10th. All performances start at 8:00 p.m. All Thursdays are “Pay What You Can” nights for available unreserved, first-come, first-served seating. Tickets purchased in advance for all shows are $18.00 General, and $15.00 for Students and Seniors. Advance tickets are available online at www.brownpapertickets.com or by phone at 1-800-838-3006. Day of performance tickets purchased at the box office are $21.00 General, $18.00 for Students and Seniors. Theater Schmeater is located at 1500 Summit Ave., between Pike and Pine on Capitol Hill in Seattle.
