Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest. ~Lady Bird Johnson

Kelly, you didn't answer - why will you vote no? I am a homeowner, so a "yes" vote would directly affect me through my taxes. If I figured right, it would cost me about $60 a year. That's about $1.15/week. I spend $1.10 once or twice a week for Stewart's coffee (in my own mug), so I think I can afford the library fee. I appreciate the library because I rarely read a book more than once, so why pay for an unread book to take up more space in my house?

Skip a trip or two to Barnes & Noble and support your local library! There are enough shuttered buildings in Troy and the library provides so much for everyone in terms of services, programming, and community building.

I love this place because it offers unlimited opportunities for great books, and then there are all the free events like the chance to hear author/ghost hunter David Pitkin tell stories from his paranormal exploits. (Wed 10/7) Can't wait! Can't wait! This one will fill up quickly so reserve a seat if you want to go!

Troy Public Library The Troy Public Library is in the process of changing its charter from the Association Library model to the Special District Public Library model. Thanks to the sponsorship of Ron Canestrari and Roy McDonald, a bill has passed the New York State Legislature providing for the creation of the Special District Public Lib...rary for the City of Troy. This legislation has been signed by the governor and is now ready for the final step in the process – approval by you.

Why are we recommending this change? The antiquated Association model is unsustainable. The library is operating at a deficit that we can no longer maintain. Last year the library had to close both the Sycaway and Lansingburgh Branches and lay off ten people. The new district will put control directly into the hands of voters who will elect the library’s board of trustees and vote on the library’s annual budget. The budget of $890,000 you will see on the ballot will allow the library to reopen both branches with additional hours of service, increase the book and materials budgets and help to better maintain our historic Main Library.

Voting information:

September 29 from 7:00 am - 8:00 pm

* Main Library if your zip code is 12180
* Lansingburgh Branch if your zip code is 12182

The economy means that a lot of hard choices have to be made. When it comes time to make those decisions, think about how many people turn to the library for job searches, Internet access, health care information and resources for education and career development. Libraries are among the most effective of all public services, serving more than 2/3 of the public with less than 2 percent of all tax dollars. Vote YES September 29th!
