It's fascinating to me how the physiocratic, back-to-the-land movement gets a new burst of energy, roughly every generation. My grandfather decided to become a potato farmer in NH during WWI and was wiped out by the crash in commodity prices that followed the war. My Dad (w/ childhood memories of a winter living on potatoes & oatmeal) was horrified... Read More when I followed that example by hitching up w/ my "goat lady" in Mendocino Co., CA in the early '70's. But many members of his generation had done the same after WWII. We managed to stay on the land, admittedly by following more conventional careers as public school teachers, and I'm gratified to have one child dedicated to human-scale, organic farming.I'm convinced that an agrarian rennaissance is the key to our survival as a society.
