TransForm One TransLink to rule them all? Bay Area MTC executive director sees joining of regional transit operations as a must. "It's going to have to be implemented," he said, "through leverage, persuasion and threatening the withholding of funds."

For years, observers of the Bay Area's 28 transit agencies - including the riders - have contemplated the obvious: Why not consolidate some or all of the operations?

I think it is an excuse for not focusing on getting more funding and controlling cost increases especially on health care. We don't have a lot of municipal agencies here, and merging big agencies like Muni and AC doesn't make sense and won't save anybody money.

Great idea. I'm not convinced that MTC's (even recent) policies reflect this thinking . . .

American car buying has been guided by one grand philosophy: Which one do I want? But now, another question has begun to percolate: Do I need a car at all?

Sold my car in 2002 once I knew I could use public transit to the most important place: work. I live centrally in the urban area and can walk to most shopping needs: food and entertainment. It's liberating, but a little less spontaneity in going out of town. But I can usually borrow a car if I needed to; I don't.

I agree with friend Marilyn. I don't remember when I sold my car, but I'm glad not to have one. When I absolutely need a car of my own, City CarShare works just fine.

TransForm No need to reinvent the wheel for safer bike and ped travel. NYC is leading the way and continues to outshine the Bay Area with more and more livable streets.

It's a well-made video. I love the idea of reducing the amount of public space devoted to autos. I'm still not sure about the new bike lane designs. Probably worth trying here...

The choice is smart growth or catastrophic growth. Sprawl is suicide, the alternative is high density. I feel no construction whatsoever should be allowed until everyone agrees on the availability and reliability of water sources and the effects of water allotment on the environment.

TransForm Stuart Cohen, executive director of the statewide group TransForm, said some of the Bay Area's most congested carpool lanes – in southern Marin County, Palo Alto and Berkeley, for instance – are also places where residents need little extra incentive to invest in a green car.

Extra incentive? I guess I am a bit confused. Yes, better mileage will be one way we need to go forward, but lowering the operating cost of a car will only lead to a stagnation of vehicle miles (or increase). So in that sense, green cars could actually end up doing more damage because we will continue to invest in highways as opposed to moving toward TOD and walkable communities. Also, those communities are some of the best off in the region - I doubt they really NEED extra incentive.

My apologies. I read it as they need a little incentive, not that they need little incentive. Big difference from one letter. Thank you for setting me straight.
