The Christmas City of the High Plains lights up the prairie skies with over 6,000 colored lights.
Since 1950, WaKeeney has held the title of "Christmas City of the High Plains." A magnificent handmade 35-foot tall tree of fresh pine greenery rests under a canopy of heavenly blue lights in the middle of the main downtown... intersection. One-square block area around the tree is draped with fresh greenery, other yule decorations and lights. The entire downtown business district is outlined with perimeter lights. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting is always held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and the display remains through New Year's Day. This annual tradition is considered the largest Christmas tree and lighting display between Kansas City and Denver.
