Why give to the Senior Class Gift?
Blue Hens donate to UD for all kinds of reasons. Regardless of their backgrounds, affinities, interests and loyalties, Blue Hens give back.

It's important to understand the value of giving back to UD. In 2007 it cost over $654 million to run UD.
  • 33% of costs covered by tuition
  • 18% of costs covered by the State of Delaware
  • 49% of costs covered by funds from outside sources such as gifts from alumni, friends and parents
Benefits of Giving

In addition to showing your Blue Hen pride and solidifying your legacy at UD, there are also tangible benefits in supporting the Senior Class Gift:
  • Those who give by May 8 will have their name in the Commencement program.
  • Giving increases the value of your degree. Percentage of alumni who donate are a factor in determining national rankings. The more students and alumni support UD, the higher UD's national ranking will be. The higher the ranking, the better your degree. The improved degree will be highly valued by potential employers.
What Alumni Gifts Mean to UD

Tuition, state and federal support only cover a fraction of the cost to run UD (see above). In fact, it is only 51% of the overall budget. We are no longer state supported, but merely state assisted. You may not realize this but UD alumni, parents and friends help to insure that students get a quality education at an affordable price by making gifts to the UD!

In 2007, academic instruction and support for one student at the University of Delaware cost $21,625, yet tuition was $18,450 for out-of-state students and $7,740 for in-state students. Outside resources, like alumni donations, are critical in order to make up the difference.
