UNHCR We have had a presence in Calais since June. UNHCR staff, accompanied by an interpreter, visit towns and communes up and down the coast, meeting undocumented migrants and telling them about the asylum system in France and how to apply for refugee status, as well as assisting with applications. It's often a struggle getting people to open up, especially if smugglers are nearby.

UNHCR We're calling for an end to the detention of Lao Hmong refugees in Thailand. Three years ago recognized Lao Hmong refugees were rounded up in Bangkok and held in detention. They have not committed any crime and their detention serves no purpose. In total 158 refugees are being held in Nong Khai, this includes many women and children. The U.S. Australia, Canada and the Netherlands have offered to resettle them.

UNHCR Encouraging story. For many years Ukshin Toplica thought he might never return to Kosovo from exile in the neighbouring former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. "I always wanted to bring my family back. But we were told that Albanians had occupied all the houses in our old neighbourhood, so we felt we could not safely return."

Ukshin Toplica only felt he was really back home once he had completed renovating the house he had been forced to flee a decade ago in the Kosovo capital of Pristina.
