Wherever you travel in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you’ll see why it is called a “5-Star Wilderness.” There are 1,700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline; 150 waterfalls; 24 state parks; and 4300 inland lakes. With all that, you’d think it would be packed with people. But you could hike or bike some of America’s most beau...tiful scenery and not see another soul for miles. The U.P. is home to some of the most awe-inspiring waterfalls in the Midwest. The famous Tahquamenon Falls are the second largest east of the Mississippi River, and one of the most breathtaking attractions in the U.P. Local wildlife can be appreciated up-close at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge — the largest wildlife refuge east of the Mississippi River. It’s also a great place to experience the glow of the Northern Lights. There are over 40 lighthouses in the Upper Peninsula with guided tours of the lighthouse at Big Bay Point available in the summer. You can walk the streets of a ghost town; watch soldiers re-enact events at a colonial fort; discover mysteries of the deep at a nautical museum; and tour copper and iron mines. In the winter, 3,000 miles of groomed trails attract snowmobilers to what is annually rated the #1 snowmobiling area in the country.
