Underwater robotic gliders are helping scientists understand why massive oceanic expanses are losing virtually all of their marine life every summer.

Oceanography is hard work! The ocean swells were 8-9 feet for the several hours I accompanied Jack Barth and Anatoli Erofeev on a launch of one of Oregon State's robotic gliders. The constant data from these robots may unlock some answers to the Pacific dead zones. Fascinating to witness the complex, and very physical logistics. Hats off to the crew of the Elakha, and thank you Dramamine!

National Science Foundation (NSF) If researchers at the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., have their way, newscasts could become a lot different. Scientists here at the Intelligent Information Laboratory are working on a project called News at Seven.

As the producer I thought it most interesteing that a number ofNorthwestern journalism students are involved out with Khris Hammond's project. Also, Northwestern uses it's virtual newscasting technology internally... professors sharing research and sharing it through the avitars on News at 7 seen in various places on campus as well as the schools intranet.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Disease, pollution, and loss of habitat are killing off hundreds of species of amphibians. One of the biggest threats right now is an aquatic fungus called chytrid that infects the skin of these historically tough, resilient creatures.

Excellent video. NSF has a long history of supporting research into the causes of vanishing amphibian populations.

Biologists, intrepid volunteers and animal lovers the world over are trying everything they can, captive breeding, fungal baths, more intense study of this fungus just identified in 1999. As Prof. Vredenburg said, "They made it through massive extinction events of the past, practically unscathed. And yet here they are in our time and they’re sending us a signal. Worldwide. That something is going wrong."

National Science Foundation (NSF) "The big question that our laboratory is interested in is how do animals, including humans, manage to go and gather sensory data from the world and somehow turn that into a perception of the world," says Mitra Hartmann, associate professor at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering.

Hey guys this is Jon Baime I produced the piece on the Whisker Robots. Really fascinating stuff that Mitra Hartmann is doing. She told me that each of the whiskers has an area in the brain that is mapped similar to the positions of the whisker on the face. Reall y fascinating stuff.

This shows us the importance of NPDES regulations to preserve the quality of water. Stormwater runoff is generated when precipitation from rain and snowmelt events flows over land or impervious surfaces and does not percolate into the ground. As the runoff flows over the land or impervious surfaces (paved streets, parking lots, and building ... Read Morerooftops), it accumulates debris, chemicals, sediment or other pollutants that could adversely affect water quality if the runoff is discharged untreated. The primary method to control stormwater discharges is the use of best management practices (BMPs). In addition, most stormwater discharges are considered point sources and require coverage under an NPDES permit.
