National Science Foundation (NSF) Disease, pollution, and loss of habitat are killing off hundreds of species of amphibians. One of the biggest threats right now is an aquatic fungus called chytrid that infects the skin of these historically tough, resilient creatures.

Excellent video. NSF has a long history of supporting research into the causes of vanishing amphibian populations.

Biologists, intrepid volunteers and animal lovers the world over are trying everything they can, captive breeding, fungal baths, more intense study of this fungus just identified in 1999. As Prof. Vredenburg said, "They made it through massive extinction events of the past, practically unscathed. And yet here they are in our time and they’re sending us a signal. Worldwide. That something is going wrong."

Peter NSF-funded project studies links between ancient and modern penguin diets with climate change and human impacts to the Antarctic ecosystem. Read it in the U.S. Antarcitic Program's online publication, The Antarctic Sun:

National Science Foundation (NSF) "The big question that our laboratory is interested in is how do animals, including humans, manage to go and gather sensory data from the world and somehow turn that into a perception of the world," says Mitra Hartmann, associate professor at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering.

Hey guys this is Jon Baime I produced the piece on the Whisker Robots. Really fascinating stuff that Mitra Hartmann is doing. She told me that each of the whiskers has an area in the brain that is mapped similar to the positions of the whisker on the face. Reall y fascinating stuff.

A new theory suggests lowly algae may be the killer behind the world's great species annihilations. Today, just about anywhere there is water, there can be toxic algae. The microscopic plants usually exist ...

This shows us the importance of NPDES regulations to preserve the quality of water. Stormwater runoff is generated when precipitation from rain and snowmelt events flows over land or impervious surfaces and does not percolate into the ground. As the runoff flows over the land or impervious surfaces (paved streets, parking lots, and building ... Read Morerooftops), it accumulates debris, chemicals, sediment or other pollutants that could adversely affect water quality if the runoff is discharged untreated. The primary method to control stormwater discharges is the use of best management practices (BMPs). In addition, most stormwater discharges are considered point sources and require coverage under an NPDES permit.

This was one of my favorite stories that we have done so far. How is it that these insects with tiny little brains can have such complex social interactions. DNA is powerful stuff. we have only started to unlock the mysteries coded in our genes!

We actually shot this story in California BEFORE the deadly helicopter accident over the Hudson River. Lucky for us our reporter Miles O'Brien is NY based, and was able to scoot down to the heliport to give our story a news edge.
